Absolute Batman #1

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 9.5 out of 10.

Absolute Batman, a comic which has not come without scepticism. With a logo that looks like it belongs in Roblox, it was hard to take this seriously when it was first announced, though we should never judge a comic book by its cover – honestly though, look at that symbol. What even is that? When I first saw it, I thought Batman had taken less time caring about his figure, stopping the unrealistic body images media can often highlight. It turns out it’s quite the opposite… he now looks like a cross between Batman and the Hulk – perhaps the definition of the word ‘gym buff’.

For many, Absolute Batman will be a breath of fresh air. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the New 52 series so it’s nice to see a completely new universe. But, is Absolute really going to become the new mantle? Will it leave that much of a lasting impression on a generation like the original detective comics or the New 52? Let’s find out in this Absolute Batman #1 review.

The Review

Absolute Batman is not like anything we have seen before. We have seen many reboots and even many different universes, but this time we see an authentic and much more menacing Batman than ever before, one without fame or fortune – which means we can say goodbye to our beloved butler Alfred – kind of! Batman is not the only one who is built differently this time around, Alfred has also acquired a gym membership and taken to kicking some butt. This is something that is definitely going to take some getting used to, but I’m all in for it. In fact, he may remind some of you of Billy Butcher from The Boys – perhaps a little less snarky and less rage driven Butcher, that is.

Absolute Batman #1 gives us the origin story of the Batman in this universe, which, much like the rest of the comic, is very different. The original origin, though iconic, can sometimes be a little tiresome to read after the 1000th time, so it was strangely delightful to learn about this universe’s young Bruce Wayne, and the things that torment his very spirit.

As always, with Batman comes death and destruction, and what destruction he brings! With blades hidden in his ears and a sort of axe hidden on his chest, this Batman pushes the boundaries of good and bad, quite literally maiming his opponents to clean up the streets – this series might in fact be the most gory and violent Batman yet – definitely not intended for a younger audience, though swear words are censored.

It is almost impossible to highlight any problems with this comic, it really is a perfect work of art. In fact, my main problem was with the lack of backstory on this new vigilante Alfred Pennyworth, but there is still time. Within the first few pages you learn that Ozzie (hinted towards being the Penguin), Harvey (we can only assume Dent) and Selina Kyle are in fact a part of Bruce’s friendship circle, which is something I want, and need, a little more information about. It was so quickly brushed over – I would like them to become a bigger part of this universe rather than just a nod of appreciation, but it is very hard to see how that is going to work.

Why would Bruce be friends with the Penguin? Perhaps it’s a case of ‘keep your friends close, but your enemies closer’? Either way I am not totally against Batman having to fight more of his turned bad friends. Another thing that felt like a nod was Crime Alley. Famously, this is where Bruce loses his parents in other media. This time, however, Bruce is from Crime Alley(?) – I didn’t even realise there were houses in the back alley of a cinema but here we are.

As I am sure you gathered from this article, there are going to be a lot of things we need to get used to in the Absolute universe, it truly is a unique piece. One thing to remember when going into this is that Absolute Batman is its own story, in its own world, where anything can happen. It simply cannot be compared to anything else because, though inspired by the Batman we have seen for years, this is a different dude, who we have never met before.

One thing is certain, Issue 2 is going to see the return of another iconic character I am eager to see in this universe!

Absolute Batman #1 sets up a compelling story, in a world I am excited to explore! With more comics releasing within this universe including Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman, Scott Snyder is creating a much larger universe, one set aside from the canon, which DC has been lacking for so many years now!

I expected to be indifferent about this, but after reading it, all my scepticisms have been put aside and I can safely say… this is the best comic book I have read in 2024. The ideas this comic presents are so unique it brings a completely new light on beloved characters. There is no telling what will happen next.

In summary, I am ‘All In’ for the absolute universe and have every faith this will continue to be a work of pure perfection. Let us know in the comment section what your thoughts of Issue 1 and your theories on where this series is heading.
