Another week, another addition to Absolute Batman is here, but this one is massive! Absolute Batman #19 has been hyped up for weeks on social media, with the long awaited arrival of Robin, but can this issue like up to the hype or was it all for nothing? Lets talk about exactly that in our Absolute Batman #19 review

This review will be relatively spoiler-free. However, there is so much we need to talk about, it would be worth reading the issue first if you want a complete blind experience.

Absolute Batman has continuously introduced iconic characters as the series has progressed, and it has always been a very exciting read. That’s why when it comes to them bringing Batman’s most iconic ally, Robin, into the mix, the internet has gone wild. Especially considering that for this one, Scott Snyder has gone all out and is bringing multiple variants to the series.

But here’s the catch… not only are we introduced to multiple different Robins (FIVE in fact), Deathstroke and Scarecrow make their debut to the series. I hate to say it, but this is the first time for me this comic has just felt like a little too much. It was still an good issue, great even, I just don’t think it was the best idea to introduce essentially an entirely new set of characters all at once.

I just don’t see why this issue had to do more than introduce us to the Robins, it could have just as easily ended with us seeing Scarecrow plotting and pickup on that in the next issue to just spend a little more focus on Robin, it certainly would have felt less cluttered. With that being said, I really did enjoy the direction this issue has taken the series in. There are clearly plenty of opportunities for team ups on the horizon for Batman and the army of boy (and girl) wonders.

Another low point for me is the fact that a villain as powerful as Deathstroke is simply doing PR for Joker. It’s clear already that there is much more to him than that but I honestly just cannot see the character settling for such an insult to his entire being.

Absolute Batman #19 is not all bad though! The story, though a little cluttered, is solid and the artwork is inspirational – truly some of the best in the series so far. Once again Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin really bring this issue to life. It is so hard now to imagine the series without these legendary artists. Scarecrow looks so terrifying, seeing him for the first time gave me genuine goosebumps. If you thought Poison Ivy was bad, prepare for nightmares.

In short Absolute Batman #19 is worth the read. View it as a gimmick and you will certainly enjoy it. Honestly I believe this new arc is going to turn out to be my favourite from the series so far, I disappointed in myself for not fully vibing with this issue, but it really does bring so much hope for what lies ahead.

Absolute Batman #19 is full of debuts, is story rich and paves the way for a really spectacular new arc. Longtime fans of Batman are sure to get a big fix from this issue.
