Absolute Batman #4

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 10 out of 10.

It’s finally time, after an absolutely long month of waiting it’s finally time for Absolute Batman #4! This series has consistently gotten better and better as the universe has expanded, and this week is no different. After the last issue left fans shell shocked, there is a lot to talk about so let us waste no time and get into the Absolute Batman #4 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, but make sure you have read through the previous issues before continuing.

The Review

The last issue ended on Bruce Wayne making the hardest decision he has ever had to make before… give up being the Batman for a life changing sum of money or continue fighting an ever worsening battle and put Martha in even more danger. Much to readers shock, he took the deal. Absolute Batman #4 unfortunately does not give us the aftermath of this decision, but instead offers readers a Year One type of storyline where we see Bruce becoming the Batman over a series of different flashbacks.

Though this might not have been the story I wanted this week, a slight detour was expected to build up even more hype for the outcome of issue 3’s conclusion and Absolute Batman #4‘s origin story is very much enjoyable and necessary. We gain a deeper knowledge of Bruce Wayne’s life and his drive to becoming Batman, which gives us more insight as to why he would make such a detrimental decision.

Though the action this week was non-existent, Absolute Batman #4 was as thrilling and gripping as ever. Despite being able to skip this issue if you wanted to continue with the current storyline, you really would be missing a lot – after reading this I feel a much stronger connection to Bruce Wayne which is as important as building a connection to Batman.

The use of different ranges of sepia tones to differentiate between each time period was both interesting and pleasing to look at in Absolute Batman #4. Flashbacks within flashbacks can sometimes be confusing and hard to follow, that was just not the case in this issue.

I find myself struggling to say anything negative about this comic, and so I will just say it’s perfect. Yes I was disappointed slightly that the cliff-hanger in Absolute Batman #3 is yet to be resolved (or even the tease of Joker from Absolute Batman #1), but the world Scott Snyder is building with these comics goes far beyond a single issue so those plots in the long scheme of things are just a tiny part of the Absolute universe and are just not worth rushing – I found myself so enthralled with Absolute Batman #4, I almost completely forgot those were even contributing factors to this universe. I am rarely this impressed with a comic book than I have been with Absolute Batman so I am officially giving Absolute Batman #4 Nerdy Nook’s first 10 star rating purely for its world building and creativity.

Even without a major cliff-hanger, I am so excited to see where this series goes and what the next issue brings us.

Absolute Batman #4 is an spectacular addition to the Absolute universe and a prime example as to why DC put Scott Snyder in charge of their All In initiative. It’s creativity and world building goes way beyond what readers ever expected and acts as a perfect Batman Year One story to the series.

I simply cannot recommend this Absolute Batman enough if you are still yet to read it. But do not take my word for it, pick up the series today and thank me in the comments later! Since this does act as a Year One story, you could even start with Absolute Batman #4 then continue with issues 1 – 3 if you wanted to start off with knowing more about this universe’s Batman.

What are your thoughts on Absolute Batman #4 and the entire Absolute universe so far? Who would you like to see in their own series? Whatever your thoughts and feelings, share them with us in the comment section of this article.
