Absolute Evil #1 Review

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 8 out of 10.

It’s hard to believe it has been approximately 1 year since the Absolute series began, and that calls for celebration. What better way to celebrate than with the series first ever crossover event where all the Absolute villains come join forces to try and stop this emergence of superheroes, I am of course talking about Absolute Evil #1. This series promises to bring us exciting new characters and ‘one unmissable twist’, but is it all too good to be true? Lets talk about that in our Absolute Evil #1 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be relatively spoiler free. However, there are some minor points I would like to discuss that do not take away from the story, so catch up before you continue reading if you want to go in completely blind.

The sudden emergence of Superheroes has caught the eyes of the people call the shots, they must now form a villainous alliance to keep their schemes from being disrupted. But, not everyone has the same ideas which can only lead to inevitable conflict and absolute chaos changing the course of the Absolute universe forever.

Much like the rest of the Absolute series, I have been extremely eager to get my hands on this comic book. I have been waiting patiently for all the little pieces to fall into place and really make the series feel like one big universe, well the wait is over and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. We have had subtle hints to the comics being connected with things like Jimmy Olsen mentioning the Joker in Absolute Superman but nothing too concrete just yet, it was a breath of fresh air to see how well they all flow together. Every villain is the same, dark, twisted, and pure evil person we have seen in previous comics.

Straight off the mark, Absolute Evil creates hype by introducing a few new characters to the Absolute series, namely Hawkman and Green arrow. Green arrow is already set to have his own series release soon but what an awesome debut for the character, you can already see what he has to offer. Hawkman, is a character I often shy away from, not because he is bad, but he always feels really corny to me, this might be the only time my opinion of that has been changed. Though we do not get a deep dive into the character, his presence is so strong and honestly quite frightening. The only thing I can think to compare his new look to is The Batman Who Laughs.

Absolute Evil #1 not only introduces exciting new characters to the table, but expands on existing ones. Somehow it even manages to expand on existing storylines while perfectly setting up the next chapter for the series. Unfortunately, Absolute Evil is a one shot, but what a one shot it is! There is enough to make you feel completely satisfied (almost).

There is so much potential to continue this villainous spinoff, it seems like a waste just to use it as a gateway into the much larger story, I am sure their are a lot of people who would stick with it if it was to become a longer series, but at least for now it acts as a really good first crossover, which brings me hope for the Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman crossover which lurks just around the corner.

This is the part of the review where I normally praise the artist and colourist of the comic… there is no exception here. This series is absolutely stunning. To begin with, while the scenes are being set, it is nothing out of the ordinary, but when the action hits you certainly know about it with some artistically disturbing panels you will not soon forget. More importantly, the art style flows with the rest of the Absolute series. Giuseppe Camuncoli and Romulo Fajardo Jr. are a great addition to the Absolute series and I hope we get to see their talents again very soon.

Overall, Absolute Evil #1 was a solid comic, that contributes so much to the bigger picture of the Absolute universe. While some fans may have been waiting for this worlds Justice League, Absolute Evil does what the Absolute series does best and has given us exactly that in a unique and obscure way. It’s only downfall is that it really does feel far too short, especially for the price which is much higher than the regular monthly issues.

Absolute Evil #1 expands on the Absolute universe as a whole while introduce some more twisted versions of iconic characters. Though short, Absolute Evil truly makes its mark on the series and is undoubtedly worth the read.

What are your thoughts on Absolute Evil #1? Where do you think the events of Absolute Evil will take the series from here? Let us know! Until next time, thanks for reading!
