Rating: 8 out of 10.

Another Wednesday, another exciting instalment to one of our favourite series of late, the Absolute comics. This week, brought us the long awaited second issue in Absolute Flash, which last month left readers stunned and myself a little sceptical. This issue continues forward at the same pace which really finding its own footing in the universe, which has given us a lot to talk about in this Absolute Flash #2 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, we do however recommend you read the previous issue before continuing if you want to completely avoid spoilers as we will be discussing where this issue picks up from – this is your only warning!

Last issue, we saw Wally West in a fearful state over his new abilities which concluded in the shocking realisation that somehow, these powers had led to a beloved character in the Flash fandom, Barry Allen. Absolute Flash #2 expands on that plot and contributes massively to the overall story.

As I said in the intro, the previous issue of Absolute Flash had me concerned. Though it was a spectacular comic, there was the issue of working with 3 different time periods without much distinction between then. Luckily this issue sticks to a set timeline and feels much more easily to follow thanks to that. Of course, Flash has always been heavy on time and the multiverse, but that was not an element I had anticipated to be featured so early on in this story. With that being said, it is still apparent in this issue and executed so flawlessly this time I find myself in awe.

There is still one slight problem I am having with Absolute Flash so far, and that is simply the villains. Bluntly put, Captain Cold feels like the wrong villain for this story. While we ditched the cheesy elements Flash can often bring, he is quite honestly the only thing holding the story back. He might not be the main villain in this plot as teasers may suggest, but he is still very apparent in this story and it completely took me out of this world.

Like the last issue, the artwork showcased in Absolute Flash #2 is truly outstanding – it fits the Flash aesthetic so well and contributes to a sci-fi aspect which is so incredibly satisfying. The colours are vibrant, I could happily just stare at certain panels all day.

One thing is for sure, and that is that Absolute Flash knows how to do a cliff-hanger. If you thought last issue was a big one, wait till you finish Absolute Flash #2 – it left me so excited for issue 3, I had to pre-order it as soon as I had finished! Though this issue finds itself ranking a respectable 8, Absolute Flash #3 is set to be our highest ranked comic in the series so far.

It’s safe to say, this was a very good read! I believe it will only get better and still has a lot of potential. I must say, for a speedster comic, it just feels like a slow burner, and we are left still unknowing about what happened to Barry and why Wally’s dad is chasing him instead of protecting him – maybe he is just that patriotic and see’s Wally as a threat. We will eventually get to the bottom of it all, but for now it just feels like the story is going a fumbling just a little.

Absolute Flash #2 overall was an improvement from last issue, an already near perfect comic. There is still some room for improvements, but this issue was certainly a step in the right direction – all in all a fantastic read and a great example of what the series has in store.

What are your thoughts on Absolute Flash #2? Is this Wally West a good addition to the Absolute universe? Whatever your thoughts and feelings, share them with us in the comment section of this article.
