Absolute Martian Manhunter #6 Review

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 9.5 out of 10.

Another Wednesday, another Absolute awesome comic book and this time is another is the latest issue of Absolute Martian Manhunter. Due to life, I missed out on reviewing issue #5, so I sat down (at 11:45pm) to catch up before issue #6 arrived… I am so glad I did. As the series first ark concludes, we have a lot to talk about in this Absolute Martian Manhunter #6 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, though we recommend you read the previous issue before continuing.

Last issue teased something huge, an absolute icon, Darkseid. Of course with that also brought the theory of Anti-life, an equation to brainwash and enslave entire worlds. Absolute Martian Manhunter #6 continues right where we left off with not only John Jones facing impending doom, but the entire world.

This series has been a strange one for me to get into – not necessarily hard, it’s just not a genre that I would normally dive into. However, much to my surprise, as the series first arc concludes, I am pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this series. Absolute Martian Manhunter is not your regular superhero comic book series, it is even quite unique when it comes to psychological thrillers, but I realise now that is where this comic shines.

I would be lying if I said I was not sceptical when Darkseid was introduced in this series, it just seemed a little too big for Absolute Martian Manhunter. Despite my scepticisms, Darkseid is the perfect villain for this series. Weirdly, it was quite a subtle introduction for such a menace in issue #5, which then set such a strong footing for the series going forward not only in issue #6 but the series next arc.

I will not say too much as to steer away from spoilers, but Absolute Martian Manhunter #6 has one of the most action packed fight scenes we have seen in any Absolute comic so far. It plays out in a very interesting an unique way which really respected the series psychological roots, and yet somehow felt like something you would see in any other super hero comic. This was such an explosive and intense way to end the first arc considering up until now it had felt relatively slow.

Absolute Martian Manhunter always impresses with its beautiful panels, exploding with abstract art… this issue takes that to new levels. As the Green and White Martians battle against each other, ever single panel is as abstract and gripping as the last. You have to work hard sometimes to make out all the pieces but it is truly incredible to look at – exceptional work from Javier Rodriguez.

I wish there was more for me to say but this series has truly found its footing and intern found its permanent place on my bookcase. I cannot wait to see where the series heads from hear and can only hope that Darkseid makes his return sooner rather than later in Absolute Evil when it drops next month.

Absolute Martian Manhunter #6 is unique, abstract and well worth the read. Whilst it is so different to any other superhero comic on the market, this finale was a true heroes tale. The series is only going up from here.
