Absolute Superman #2

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Still going strong, the Absolute universe gets another great addition this week with Absolute Superman #2. The series so far has been almost perfect and the first issue ended on such a good cliff-hanger hooking me instantaneously, it’s about time we see what happens next! Was it all worth the wait? Before we get there, I just wanted to take a second appreciate how good this Absolute series has been so far. Despite being only 6 comics in, I have already found myself attached to these variations of my favourite supes and simply cannot wait till we see more DC comics under the Absolute belt.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, however I will make mention of where Absolute Superman #1 concluded, so be sure to read that before you continue – you have been warned. With that, let’s get into the Absolute Superman #2 review.

The Review

Absolute Superman #1 ended with Superman being held at gun point by none other than the love of his life (in the usual universe) Lois Lane. Louis Lane working with Peacemakers? That’s how it comes across at the start of Absolute Superman #2, however this corrupt and careless government sector seemingly goes deeper than first thought.

Lois Lane and Superman, after being handcuffed together for half the comic seem to be already building a much deeper connection. This was to be expected, but this Lois is different. Usually she would admire Superman for being super, this time she is more curious than admirable – almost like she wants to study him. That being said, there was a panel where she describes his scent as amazing, which did make me feel a little uncomfortable.

I say this every week, those of you who are regular readers are probably getting bored of it, but Absolute Superman #2 is visually stunning. These comics have some of the most incredible artwork I have ever seen which, and despite being drawn by different artists, flows throughout the entire Absolute series.

In Absolute Superman #2, we also see more of what happened to Krypton and slowly start to understand a little more of this Kal-El’s upbringing on his home planet – I have to say, I have never loved Jor-El and Lara more, it is so lovely to see how much they mean to each other when presumably they are going to die – but who actually knows, the Absolute universe is a weird and wild one.

Although Absolute Superman #2 is fantastical and action packed, there is something so very relatable about it. Nothing too crazy, but there are a few moments where the characters just feel so much more real – Kal-El doing online classes was just one of those moments. I loved that about this comic, there is no greater feeling than having a connection to a character you admire so much.

For the first time in all our reviews of the Absolute series this far, I do not have an issue with pacing. The timing was pretty much perfect and did not jump over any details. The only reason I’m giving this a 9 is because not too much happened to rank in any higher. The story continued to build on this unique, beautiful, universe, and is undoubtedly building to bigger things, but this comic was just a small part of the overall picture – ranking it any higher would not be fair to the later comics which will be deserving of a solid 10.

Absolute Superman #2 is so visually stunning and offers a unique yet relatable narrative. This comic, at its core, is about corruption of the people in charge and subtly preaches the importance of taking care of each other in times of hardship. It is simply everything a Superman comic should be and is executed so brilliantly.

Let us know your thoughts on the Absolute series so far in the comment section! Do you want to see more of Krypto the super dog? Why we are only getting one Krypto panel a week I will never know but whatever your thoughts on the series, I would love to know.
