Absolute Wonder Woman #2

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 8 out of 10.

After 2 week long weeks, the Absolute series continues today with the next instalment in this twisted franchise, Absolute Wonder Woman #2. If you read our review of Issue 1, you will know it was very much a prologue. While this is not a completely a bad thing, fans will be pleased to know that this issue dives straight into the Absolute Universe we are growing to love – and what a universe its shaping out to be. This new take on Wonder Woman is more fierce, and dare I say more epic, than we have ever seen before.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be completely spoiler free, although you might want to read Absolute Wonder Woman #1 before you continue as it gives so much context to Wonder Woman’s Absolute universe. With that, let’s get into the Absolute Wonder Woman #2 review.

The Review

Absolute Wonder Woman #2, starts where Issue 1 leaves off. A giant harbinger, known as Harbinger Prime (very creative, I know) has invaded earth and only the Princess of the Underworld can stop it. After a rough and tumble, Diana tries bargaining with the Harbinger to return to the depths from which it came. That, however, is only the beginning – after all who sent Harbinger Prime?

Everything about this comic feels strangely biblical, which you would expect, and honestly it makes the whole thing feel more like a ordinary Wonder Woman comic. The Absolute Universe has done so well to feel so unique, and yet despite this and it feeling more epic than ever, there is not too much that differentiates Absolute Wonder Woman from regular Wonder Woman – of course she has a different origin story, but to her core, Diana is an Amazonian and still lives by the same standards set by the Amazonians, just a little more devilish.

Though this might look a critique, it’s far from it – having this Wonder Woman still share some characteristics of the regular Wonder Woman we know and love makes it all the more easier to read and enjoy, especially if you have never been an avid reader of the Wonder Woman comics.

The artwork is something which we absolutely(excuse the pun) must discuss. Just like the issue Absolute Wonder Woman #1, the artwork in Absolute Wonder Woman #2 continues to be incredibly stunning – hands down some of my favourite artwork in a comic this year. Some how, it perfectly represents a fantastical universe with undertones of a horror universe.

It cannot all be praise though, and so I must express, it is very disappointing how the quickly the action is over in this comic. Last issue was building up this massive fight which was over before you even get past the cover. In the long term, I am sure this will not matter since something big is clearly coming, but for this early on it made the pacing was slightly disappointing.

The pacing of the whole Absolute universe seems to be like a rollercoaster at the moment on that topic. With Issue 1 of Absolute Batman being the best comic I have read this year, to Issue 2 being slightly disappointing, I was certainly going into Absolute Wonder Woman #2 with lowered expectations but I am pleased to say most of my doubts were misplaced – if my only issue was with pacing then that is a pretty solid comic.

Just like the rest of the comics in the Absolute Universe, Absolute Wonder Woman #2 is another near perfect comic building up to a much larger story which is sure to have readers hooked to the very last page turn. Though this Absolute Wonder Woman #1 and #2 seem to be going at a much slower pace than the rest of the series, the character building, stunning fantastical artwork and exciting story telling most definitely has me hooked for the foreseeable future.

Let us know your thoughts on the Absolute series so far in the comment section! Is this more edgy demonic take on Wonder Woman a worthy addition to the Absolute universe? Whatever your thoughts, I would love to know.
