Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #0

The Prologue Review

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.

The Last Halloween will be the final series in the iconic Long Halloween series. The 10 issue series starts with an extra comic, issue 0, which serves as a prologue to The Last Halloween. After reading it, I am very excited to see how The Last Halloween progresses over the coming months. The Long Halloween, for those who do not know, was essentially the origin story for Two-Face, an iconic story for an iconic character. In it we also see the diminishing of the friendship between Harvey Dent, Batman and Commissioner Gordon and, judging by the prologue, we may see this expanded in The Last Halloween.

In this review, we’ll be talking about the good and bad parts of Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #0 whilst keeping key plot points hidden.

The Review

Like the stories before it, The Last Halloween is another Two-Face story and this time we see him reunited with his wife Gilda Dent – that is until another Gotham villain, the Calendar Man, interferes. With Gilda’s life in danger, Harvey Dent has no other choice than to team up with Batman to try and save the only thing that matters to him.

Now the first thing which is very noticeable in The Long Halloween is the change in artstyle when compared to the classic The Long Halloween comics. Unfortunately this is due to beloved artist Tim Sale, who worked on the original title, passing away in 2022. As sad as Sales’ passing might be for fans, it is thanks to him and his lifelong dedication to comic books that we have ended up with this new compelling story in The Long Halloween universe, his memories are being honoured greatly with this new series being dedicated to him.

Though we only have the prologue available right now, the groundwork has been set for a very dark, disturbing and action packed series. Love seems to be playing a big part in this story, not only with Mrs and Mrs Dent, but surprisingly, Robin and Barbara Gordon have only now been introduced to one another and I can’t imagine those two not falling deeply for each other. In an another odd twist of events, Barbara is actually Commissioner Gordon, and while this was a concept first introduced in the 80’s, it’s really been seen as canon. Still, it will be interesting to see how their relationship plays out with this switch in Barbara’s job role being a key part of it.

It feels almost impossible to fault the Prologue, especially given how short the issue is. In fact, that’s my only real problem, though that is kind of expected – it does feel somewhat strange when a title of a comic is almost as long as the comic itself. The setup for the series is very defined, with a clear consistency between this and the previous Long Halloween comics that will be very pleasing to long-term fans of the series. However, the story and characters are so well introduced, new readers are sure to enjoy this too – it may even be the perfect starting point to get into the comic book series.

I wish I had more to say but let’s keep this short and sweet just like the Prologue itself. While brief, it does give us an indication of how we can expect the rest of the series to go – luckily enough, we do not have to wait long with issue 1 of The Last Halloween dropping September 25th, so check back next week for the review on that! Until then, let us know in the comments your thoughts and expectations of the series. What comics are you reading at the moment if not The Last Halloween?
