Best Games to Stream in 2024

Live streaming has increased in popularity rapidly over the last few years. The idea of earning an income doing something you enjoy is a concept which appeals to most… but it is not easy. Streaming comes with its challenges, the biggest one actually being the most important one, viewership. Twitch, for example, has approximately 7 million streamers active streamers – how are you supposed to get yourself seen in that huge competition? This is where this article comes in!

As a full-time content creator myself I have spent years figuring out what works for me and what does not – in that time I have seen huge growth in multiple categories and have ultimately figured out what kind of content I would like to create. This took me around 5 years, but hopefully with my knowledge put into this article, you will find your footing sooner. Let’s get into it!

1. MMO’s

2. Horror

3. Racing

4. Games to Play with Viewers

5. Just Chatting

6. Games and Demos

Black Desert Online

Fans of MMOs, try to stay clear of streaming oversaturated games like World of Warcraft or Elderscrolls Online, instead streaming a similar title like Black Desert Online could be your big break. This category has a large following but very small competition compared to the other MMOs I previously mentioned. They even have a creator program for you to work towards and incentivise your chatters to stick around and help you achieve! For me MMO’s are something I enjoy but could not stream as they take a lot of focus which I do not have most of the time – bear this in mind if you are someone who is easily distracted.

Dead by Daylight

Fans of horror, here is a great entry for you. In Dead by Daylight you can either play as one of four survivors and play with your community, or you can play as the killer for a solo experience. This category has a large following with not too much competition but more importantly an audience which has been thriving on Twitch for years. This is probably mostly due to the constant updates Dead by Daylight pushes out, making it easier for streamers to create new content.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In terms of karting games, there are a few options out there, however with a committed stream schedule and a lot of practice you can excel in this thriving category. Creating competitive streams in the category is more specifically what I would suggest, no one wants to watch someone crashing every 2 seconds, but the high energy and fast gameplay you get from watching competitive Mario Kart streamers is an experience like no other – seriously if you need an example I would say check out Lukealele on Twitch and tell him where you came from so he knows we appreciate his content.

Jackbox Games

If playing with your viewers is what you set out to do, this is probably the best category for you. Jackbox has a much lower average viewership than the above categories, but that does not mean it should be overlooked. Jackbox offers a large selection of party games, some inspired by classics like Pictionary, others are completely original ideas, which means there’s something for everyone. The best part about Jackbox is, it is free for your viewers to play, you will have to own your chosen packs but your viewers can join for free on any browser. If you need suggestions on what to play, I recommend you check out our best Jackbox Games article

Gartic Phone

Gartic Phone is another party game, this time predominantly for drawing! This is a game I have really grown to love recently, to the point where I end almost every stream with it – it’s such a perfect and fun way to decompress with your chat after some sweaty Fortnite lobbies. Gartic Phone is free to play on any browser and comes with a large category of modes to enjoy, the normal mode being a visual representation of the classic game ‘Telephone’ where you sit in a circle and whisper a sentence to the person next to you which often drastically changes as it goes round.

Whatsamusic

Even music lovers have a game they can share with a new and existing community. Whatsamusic is a ‘guess the song’ browser game, where viewers submit songs based on themes then (you guessed it) try to guess the name on others submissions. Though this category is still very small, there seems to be a very committed community to Whatsamusic so it shouldn’t be too tough to find people to play with.

Among Us

If you spent any time on Twitch in the last few years, you will know this one. Among Us is the second largest category on this list with 14 million followers, but the viewership is surprisingly low most of the time making this an excellent category to grow in. In Among Us, the concept is pretty simple – you either play as a crewmate or an imposter! Crewmates complete tasks, imposters kill and try to cover up these murders, easy right? This game is a great way to collaborate with other streamers in or just play with your community – I will say Among Us is 1000x better with VC so if you are playing with viewers be careful of who you let play.

Just Chatting

Though this one is not a game, do not underestimate the power of the Just Chatting category on Twitch. Big streamers like Mizkif, Esfand and even KaiCenat will utilise this section to its fullest by starting every stream in Just Chatting before moving into their main title for the day – do not get put off by the fact they do it, there is a reason. Just Chatting allows you the opportunity to get to know your audience in the biggest category on Twitch. While I would normally stay clear of the oversaturated categories, this one is a sure exception.

Games and Demos

If you enjoy playing indie games, this category is the one for you. Though many indie games may have their own category already, a lot of the time these can remain undiscovered. Using the Games and Demos category can bring attention to your stream and these well deserving titles. Though I do not often use this category myself, my wife (our very own Laura) plays indie games in almost every stream and has been thriving in this category!

What to Stream on Twitch?

This is a question which I cannot answer for you – every streamer’s content must be unique to them and excel their personality. Choose a game listed above based purely on the content you which to make.

Conclusion

Twitch has many categories which you will find easier to grow in than more saturated titles like Fortnite. Growing your community in less saturated titles then moving into the bigger ones as you grow is the key to streaming success.
