Best Horror Games to Stream on Twitch
Horror is a genre not lost for content, but with so many options it’s hard to tell which are the best horror games to stream on Twitch. It can sometimes be a cause for concern when switching out of your regular content, but that’s where this article comes in. Below, not only will we be looking at some of the most popular and most immersive horror games, I will be breaking down the audience for said games to give you a better understanding of which will fit seamlessly into your content.
Whether you are planning a stream for the spooky season, or simply fulfilling a horror goal set by yourself, I guarantee there will be a game below which you and your community love, so let’s get into it!
1. Outlast
7. Phasmophobia
Outlast

I have a total love-hate relationship with this game. Every single time I play Outlast, I instantly regret it, and yet every year around Halloween I return to it for another spooky stream. Why? Simply because as much as this game makes me die a little inside, it is not only, 10 years later, still one of my favourite games, it’s also one of the best horror games to stream. Outlast has a small but strong fanbase; every time I have played this game someone new has popped up and likely has ended up enjoying laughing at my tears so much, they become valued members of the community. In fact, this is the very game which had our very own Alex returning to my stream, which eventually led to this beautiful site you are exploring!
The reason why I have put Outlast at the top of the list is because I genuinely believe this game is ideal for every streamer. The story is solid, the gameplay is terrifying with simple objectives and there are even some moments where you are chased by completely naked dudes (no judgement if that’s what makes it for you). Though your viewers can’t join in with this one, they will have a great time clipping all the jump scares.
Dead by Daylight

Here’s one you can play with viewers, Dead by Daylight. In this game you can either play as one of four survivors or play as the killer for a solo experience, all of which can be done with your community in customs if you have enough players. Dead by Daylight is not exactly your typical horror filled with jump scares, rather it’s a survival horror where tactics and teamwork is the key to success – though playing as the killer makes for a way less intense and kind of hilarious experience.
This is not the first time I have mentioned Dead by Daylight in one of our streaming guides, due to it having such a large following with very little competition and a committed community. If playing with viewers is your niche or you like to solo online games, this is the game for you!
Lethal Company

Here’s another one to play with your viewers, Lethal Company. Let me start by saying that while this game is very fun, it’s also very janky and not exactly scary. There are creepy elements but playing with the right people makes this more of a funny experience, rather than one of horror. That is not at all me saying it’s bad, the fact it’s so janky and amusing really does make for great content most of the time.
If you are going to play Lethal Company with viewers, we recommend you try out the ‘More Company’ mod, as it allows a lot more players to join your lobby which gives the game a more party game feel to it, though sometimes it might be a lot more hectic. Just make sure you have a certain level of trust with who you let join considering there is in-game voice chat.
Resident Evil 7

Another story driven game for almost every streamer is Resident Evil 7. The reason why I say ‘almost’ is because RE7 can be a very grindy game with a larger focus on action rather than survival, unlike Outlast. Though there are some truly terrifying moments, the fact you can take your fears head on (or off once you get a shotgun) makes everything a little less scary at times. This one is for a bit more serious gamers, though if you already have a committed community who just want to see you cry, I would highly recommend RE7 – if you are still finding your footing however, I’d recommend you give this one a miss.
There are many Resident Evil games to choose from, we even ranked them all for you here if you would rather play a different one, but Resident Evil 7 is said to be the scariest out of the bunch which is the main reason we listed it in this article. If you want more guidance though, I would highly recommend RE4 since it is beloved among fans for very good reasons.
Fears to Fathom

If streaming episodic story driven games like Life is Strange is your niche, then Fears to Fathom is a great spooky alternative. In Fears to Fathom, your choices matter which makes the story so much more immersive for viewers to watch – a good practice is to let your viewers vote in polls for the big decisions. The game may have lesser options for choices than the next entry on this list, but the gameplay makes up for all that. The graphics are the only exception when it comes to how great this game is, since they resemble that of a PlayStation 2 game, but you know what… it works!
Games like Until Dawn or The Quarry are also good alternatives for Fears to Fathom, however it is important to note those are much more cutscene based than this title and can sometimes feel a little boring to play – though that does not mean they are not exciting to watch. Remember, the most important thing is that you’re having fun with what you are doing and letting your best self shine!
Slay the Princess

This title may not have the largest category on Twitch, Slay the Princess is hands down one of the best storytelling experiences for both streamers and viewers alike. Slay the Princess is a choice-based visual novel where your actions affect the outcome, but with this one… those options are in the hundreds. Every playthrough of Slay the Princess is a unique and visually stunning experience.
It feels weird to describe this as a horror, but at its core that’s what it really is and the creepy storytelling and eerie music do resemble that of a ghost story. If heavily story driven games or the Games and Demos category is where you reside, Slay the Princess is the indie gem for you.
Phasmophobia

It would not feel right if I did not mention this, though I’m personally someone who doesn’t enjoy this as much as others. However, credit where credits due, Phasmophobia can be a great game for streamers of all sizes. The reason I personally do not enjoy this game is the repetitiveness of Phasmophobia. A few of the other games on the list can be repetitive too, but something about them feels different – Phasmophobia at times just feels far too grindy for me to enjoy.
This is a game undoubtedly for more serious gamers, however if it fits your demographic then go for it! The category on Twitch is a decent size with a committed community and not too much competition – you can even play with 3 other people too if you want to open up your lobbies to viewers.
Conclusion
There are so many popular horror games to choose from when considering spooky content, it is important to choose something which fits your audience and style. If there are any games you think deserve a place on this list, let us know in the comments section of this article. I hope this article helped you!
