Deadpool and Wolverine Review

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.

Deadpool and Wolverine, a film anticipated by many and critically scolded upon release by others. Well, let me tell you a secret… these critics who hated this movie were wrong. It was not all good, but this definitely deserves more credit than it has received. With Marvel going for another risky nostalgia play, of course it was going to receive some sort of hate. Whatever your initial thoughts are, go and see this movie and make up your own mind about it (then thank me later) – pure box office gold.

In this article, I will not spoil any main plot points for you, I’m just going to do my best to share my honest opinion of Deadpool and Wolverine with you, the good and the bad.

The Review

I won’t lie and say I was not sceptical going into Deadpool and Wolverine. Based on the trailer alone it seemed like overplayed nostalgia – I was pleasantly surprised to see I was wrong. Though there is a touch of nostalgia throughout the entirety of the movie, it was done in a very tasteful way. Every nostalgic moment was acknowledged by Deadpool in either his iconic fourth wall breaking, or just from him fangirling over fellow supes, making this a pleasant experience for new and old viewers of these franchises. As someone who grew up with their face buried inside comic books or eyes glued to superhero movies, there were very little references lost on me, all except the knowledge I would have gained from watching Loki. I’m personally not a fan of what Marvel are doing by mixing film and TV storylines, it’s over complicating things, but I was glad to see these references were explained by Deadpool.

Just like the other Deadpool movies, Deadpool and Wolverine is very funny, perhaps the funniest instalment in the trilogy maybe. The jokes are, at times, very dirty (this is not a family movie just fyi), and makes a lot of fun of Marvel itself – there is even a slight dig at DC so make sure to watch out for that. I did not expect to laugh so much the sides of my head hurt, but here I am still smiling at the thought of Wolverine getting more and more aggravated by Deadpools every breath.

As promised, I have to share my thoughts on the bad parts too. For me, it was not really a big thing, but there were a lot of fight scenes just to have fight scenes where they could have used that time to develop characters and plot. As the trailer suggested, this Wolverine did something in his world, we don’t find out what that is until over halfway through the movie, and even then I’m not sure I still completely understand what happened. I blame the short runtime for this, at only 127 minutes there was not much time to fit everything in.

The assumed main villain of this film is kind of a joke too to be honest. It felt like the movie realistically could have been resolved within the first 30 minutes if Deadpool was just more careless like he is supposed to be, but this time around he’s looking for his moment to be a hero, and this underwhelming plot line is rectified towards the end of the movie with the actual main villain stepping it up a mark.

Superhero movies are becoming fairly stale for most people right now, understandably so, but if you are going into this movie with that mindset then you will not enjoy it. However, if you try to view this movie as what it is (a comedy about two people trying to save the world), you will have a lot of fun. If you are a superhero fan though, you might just have the best night of your life. The nostalgia this movie brings was expected, but Deadpool and Wolverine pull it off better than both Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Seeing Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine, was quite literally a dream come true. Logan provided a perfect ending to Wolverine’s story, but I always felt saddened and wanted more – Deadpool and Wolverine gave me exactly that without affecting the outcome of Logan. This one in a strange way felt really final, almost like a farewell to past beloved Marvel franchises, but I honestly believe (and hope) we will see more from both Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I am sure we are all wondering how that will work with Deadpools constant fourth wall breaking, but I’m sure it will be used in good taste if this happens.
