Doctor Who Season 14 Episode 6

Rogue Review

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.

With Doctor Who’s 14th season rapidly coming to end, things are really picking up the pace! All the questions we’ve had unanswered, are seemingly about to be answered – unfortunately not until next week’s episode though. This week’s episode was THANKFULLY a very Doctor heavy episode and boy was it emotional, I don’t think a Doctor Who episode has ever made me cry so much. Not only did we see a lot of The Doctor himself, but also a potential love interest? A love interest who for the first time, is a man!

Ncuti Gatwa has been fairly quiet about his sexuality until recent interviews where he described himself as ‘queer’, but there has been speculation about himself and his rendition of The Doctor since last year’s Christmas special. Releasing the episode which confirms it at the start of Pride Month is just such a lovely sentiment. This episode was almost perfect.

This week’s episode saw The Doctor and Ruby Sunday travel back to the year 1813 to a beautiful manor house in Bath, where they attended a formal gathering which is best described by Ruby herself as Bridgerton. In the usual Doctor Who fashion, there is of course a twist. This week’s villains are a group of shape shifting birds who love drama.

On paper, this seems like a cringey concept, but it actually worked really well – even though they are hideous looking things. After seeing what they look like in their true form, the shape shifting makes sense since I would not want to look like that either if I could help it.

We are quickly introduced to a mysterious new character, later introduced as a bounty hunter called Rogue. I have to say, I loved everything about this character. Dungeons & Dragons and a Kylie Minogue fan? A man after my own heart, and The Doctors it would seem. This is the man I talked about in the intro, the 15th Doctor’s love interest. Every Doctor has had their own romantic interest in the past, even Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, but until now they have always been female. The passion these two had on screen was absolutely incredible.

Thankfully, there has not been another musical number, we did however have a very well shot dance scene between The Doctor and Rogue – the two really were the main focus of this episode which made sense since this one was titled Rogue. On the side lines, we did see Ruby being, well Ruby. There was this funny scene where Ruby walked in on an affair but was hiding behind a bookshelf, until she accidentally dropped a book and made a racket. After that she quickly made friends with the rejected lady and gossiped with her about boys, which was just so Ruby. In fact the only things we didn’t see much of were the villains themselves, until the big reveal.

The villains in this episode honestly were not that impactful, but I honestly did not mind that, this episode was more to set up the future of Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor – any more screen time from those creepy bird people might have made fast forward.

This week’s episode was by far my favourite. The fact we saw so much from The Doctor after 2 weeks of basically no Doctor was a relief. Ruby being so calm and collective during an invasion was kind of bizarre but to be fair to her, she did not really know what was going on until the episode was almost over! I really hope next season has more Rogue, I imagine he will not make an appearance in the next 2 episodes, but his and the Doctors dynamic was much too great to ignore.

The end is nearly here, the next 2 episodes are presumably going to be a two part finale and I cannot wait for to see who the hell the old lady who keeps popping up is – oh and of course find out the mystery of Ruby Sunday – almost forgot about that one since it’s not been mentioned for the last 2 episodes.
