If you are like me and had read very little to do with Strange Academy before this issue dropped, I would suggest you pick up at least a couple of issues before reading Doom Academy #1 just for a little more context. However, the concept will not be lost on you if you decide not to do that.

Just for a brief insight, Strange Academy is Doctor Strange’s school for young sorcerers. Students have been brought in from all around the world, each with their own unique traits and abilities, to home in on their magical powers – think X-Men, but with Doctor Strange instead of Professor X. Well, now imagine that school is in a world with Doctor Doom as Sorcerer Supreme and you have something even more intriguing.

Doom Academy #1 features all of the students you might know from Strange Academy but in a slightly darker setting, although nothing too sinister has happened… yet. We are introduced to Doom as a professor rather than a villain, but as the name would suggest something big is in the works. You may wonder what Doom would want with all these young people – the fact that Strange sought out some of the most gifted individuals in the world plays a huge part of that and pretty quickly answers that question and, after reading this one comic, you will find yourself speculating intently.

The fact that all the characters are introduced efficiently, helped make this comic more enjoyable. The writer, MacKenzie Cadenhead, is clearly aware that there will be a large amount of these readers who have not invested into Strange Academy and are only reading for the novelty of the One World Under Doom initiative – as said earlier, I was one of those people. Despite being a little underrated, this Doom Academy #1 does a great job of making these characters loveable – especially Zoe who takes on a lead role in this issue.

I am not usually a fan of this type of fantasy book, in fact I usually stay away from anything with too much magic with a few exceptions, but I loved Doom Academy #1. Not much has happened yet for me to give it a 10 star rating, but this issue creates great groundwork for the entire limited series to come!

Pasqual Ferry (artist) and Edgar Delgado (colourist) really came together nicely in this one to meet the fantasy aesthetic, both exceptional choices for the job. The style just screams Fantastic Four, and I think that is mostly due to Ferry’s work on Ultimate Fantastic Four for many issues, a comic I was lucky enough to read with friends when I was much younger, which meant Doom Academy easily hit the right spots for me.

Doom Academy #1 is every bit as unique and brilliant as you would expect. The concept of Doctor Doom being Sorcerer Supreme is a terrifying one, it is great to see a different side to that story. Being a five part series, readers can expect this series to move at an incredible pace which does not allow for filler issues to surface.
