Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.

The wait is finally over, the next instalment of the Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe is here. The Knuckles TV Show just dropped on Paramount+ and we binge watched the entire series to give you our honest opinion of it, without releasing any spoilers of the show – spoilers from the Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movies however are unavoidable – don’t worry if you have not seen them or it has been a while since you have, you will get a brief recap before the show begins.

In this article we are going to talk about the good, the bad and the amazing aspects of this Paramount+ original show. As a Sega fanboy I am very excited to share my thoughts with you so without further ado, lets get into it!

The Review

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, sees Knuckles introduced for the first time into the movie universe. When Doctor Robotnik is trapped on a mushroom planet, he makes a deal with Knuckles who is in search of Sonic to take Knuckles straight to him thus escaping the Mushroom planet.. Knuckles soon learns of Doctor Robotnik’s evil intentions and joins forces with Sonic and Tails to defeat Robotik, that’s where the Paramount TV series picks up from.

With the world seemingly at peace, the series follows Knuckles the Echidna as he struggles to adapt to life on Earth and help deputy sheriff Wade Whipple find his ‘true power’. Fans will be pleased to know that the Knuckles TV show includes some great cameos from our favourite characters from the Sonic movies, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles ‘Tails’ Prower and the very lovable Maddie Wachowski, though all 3 cameos take up a very short portion of the episode. However, much to fans disappointment, there is no sign of Tom Wachowski – this is honestly one of my only issues with the show.

Knuckles is honestly very fun to watch, has a lot of hilarious pop culture references and the Knuckles cast are tremendous! A lot of big names are attached to this project, including Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna himself, Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, Christopher Lloyd as Chief Pachacamac and many more. The best casting however, has to be Julian Barratt who plays Jack Sinclair, one of the bounty hunters in the show, and even performs a whole rock opera in a scene which can only be described as a fever dream – it has a very Mighty Boosh vibe about it – honestly made mine and my wife’s evening.

Now, nothing is perfect, although I really loved Knuckles there were a few things I felt unhappy about. As I mentioned earlier, Tom Wachowski was completely absent from the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off, which was quite upsetting since he plays such an important role in Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The other thing that bothered me, Knuckles screen time. Though this is a Knuckles show, and he is a giant part of it, there seems to be a much larger focus on Wade Whipple and his growth as a character as he looks towards competing in a bowling tournament – might not sound it but trust me when I say this turns out to be a very fun storyline – it would have been nice to see a little more from Knuckles with almost whole episodes missing the character completely.

Despite the few negatives, this is a great spin-off of Sonic the Hedgehog. This is not the first time Knuckles can be seen on TV since there are many Sonic animated series out there for fans to enjoy, such as Sonic Prime, it most certainly is however the characters best on screen appearance. In fact, I would even go as far as to say Knuckles is the best Paramount+ original show to release this year. It will have you laughing almost the whole time and the soundtrack is incredible – I have already added the Knuckles theme song and the entire soundtrack album to my Spotify playlists. I am curious to see how this series affects the characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and which Knuckles cast members will be reprising their roles on the big screen.

Where to Watch the Knuckles TV show?

Knuckles can be streamed right now on Paramount+ and Prime Video with a Paramount+ subscription. Collectors and diehard Sega fans will have to wait a little, but it does seem that Knuckles will be getting a Blu-ray and DVD release with pre-orders appearing on Amazon – only on the US version of the site so far.
