The Top 10 Most Anticipated Anime of 2026
2026’s Most Anticipated Anime, Ranked
As the Fall 2025 season slowly wraps up, it’s time to say goodbye to one of the most interesting years in recent memory when it comes to anime. 2025 was a year of ups and downs, underdogs and industry champions – and now, it’s time to look to the future! 2026 is looking to be quite the year for anime, so with such a wave of greatness on the way, it’s essential that fans seek out the shows they plan to watch nice and early, before we get hit with the inevitable surprise powerhouses once the year begins! That’s why today, we’re ranking our top 10 most anticipated anime of 2026! Get your watchlists ready!
While compiling this list, I was delighted to see the range of studios that made it onto our ranking. Sure, a certain studio reappears on this list more than once, but outside of that industry goliath, it’s amazing to see plenty of underrated animation studios get some shine here. It’s looking like it’s going to be a fun year! With that being said, let’s dive straight into our ranking!
10. You and I Are Polar Opposites

I think that each season, regardless of your own personal taste in anime, it’s important to have a nice, light-hearted palette-cleanser, and for anime fans, that usually takes the form of a rom-com. Well, when it comes to the romantic-comedy genre, the 2026 anime catching my eye is You and I Are Polar Opposites, a Winter 2026 anime based on the manga by Kōcha Agasawa, and brought to you by Lapin Track, a studio that has somewhat flown under the radar up until now. However, judging from their work on Shoshimin and Undead Girl Murder Farce, this series is in capable hands.
This series isn’t anything groundbreaking, but there’s a lot of heart behind it, and the manga has been praised for its comedic elements and compelling romance. If you need further convincing that You and I Are Polar Opposites is worth the watch, then let it be noted that this series has been compared positively to My Dress-Up Darling, a rom-com anime sensation. There’s a good chance that this anime may not make much of an impact when it debuts, but if it finds its proper audience, this could be the next big thing for the rom-com anime genre. Certainly a must-watch for me, and one of my most anticipated anime of the upcoming year.
You and I Are Polar Opposites airs on January 11, 2026.
9. Hell’s Paradise Season 2

Well, here’s the first MAPPA anime to grace our list, and out of the studio’s entries here, Hell’s Paradise Season 2 is certainly the one I’m the least excited about. However, I had some fun with the first season, so I’m curious to see where this story heads next. Hell’s Paradise has always felt like the neglected child when it comes to the MAPPA ‘dark shonen’ trio, especially considering that both Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen have been making waves in the movie world in 2025. Now, Gabimaru the Hollow has found his time to shine once again – let’s hope this season can seize the opportunity.
For those of you unfamiliar with Hell’s Paradise, it hosts a very interesting story, at least concept-wise. Criminals sentenced to death are given the chance to be pardoned of all of their crimes, if they can survive in a fatal realm that holds an elixir of immortality. Visually, this series is absolutely stunning, and bursts with life, despite its dark concept. While the story of the first season was a little hit-or-miss for me, I’m excited to see what Season 2 has in store for our survivalists, and that curiosity alone makes this one of my most anticipated anime of 2026. Luckily for us, we don’t have long to wait!
Hell’s Paradise Season 2 premieres on January 11, 2026.
8. Ikoku Nikki

I’m insanely curious about Ikoku Nikki, an upcoming josei anime, brought to life by Shuka, the team who worked on the incredibly beloved Natsume’s Book of Friends, with music by Kensuke Ushio, the composer behind the DAN DA DAN and Chainsaw Man soundtracks, and written by Tomoko Yamashita, one of Japan’s most progressive writers. Without even considering the premise of this anime, I’m intrigued. It’s great to see a josei anime, a genre that is woefully underrepresented, in the running for one of 2026’s most anticipated anime series, especially in a year so densely populated by shonen.
As for the plot of Ikoku Nikki, the story follows a novelist who adopts her niece, after the latter’s parents are killed in a car crash. The manga has received rave reviews since its inception, and if Shuka don’t drop the ball, I expect the anime will be met with similar renown. Certainly one of the calmer, and more emotional entries on our ranking, but a story that I can’t wait to watch unfold this year. For slice-of-life fans, make sure this upcoming series finds a place on your most anticipated anime list.
Ikoku Nikki begins airing on January 4, 2026.
7. Oshi no Ko Season 3

Winter 2026 is quite a stacked anime season, huh? Well, make some more room on your calendars, because this season is also home to the next part of Oshi no Ko, one of the most culturally-impactful anime series to debut this decade. I have a confusing relationship with this anime, a series that debuted to such bombastic acclaim, that for a while, it held the title of the highest-rated anime of all time on MyAnimeList. Then, the show began to play out, the pace began to slow down, and suddenly, Oshi no Ko plummeted in reception, down to around the 130th highest-rated anime of all time, which I think is a much more appropriate home for it.
I was fairly lukewarm on Oshi no Ko, but Season 2 renewed my interest in the show’s characters and plot. If this upcoming third season commits to the show’s more interesting aspects, particularly the murder-mystery that many fans hoped the show would follow more closely, then we could be in for a real treat. I simply can’t rank Oshi no Ko Season 3 any higher based on the fact that this show’s quality is so unpredictable. We could be in for a historic season of anime with this one, or we could feast our eyes on another fairly middling teen-drama. Either way, it’s one of our most anticipated anime of the year, and another show to add to your January watchlist.
Oshi no Ko Season 3 premieres on January 14, 2026.
6. Black Clover Season 2

It’s sort of mind-boggling that this anime is airing under the name Black Clover Season 2, considering that implies that the first season of this show ran for 170 episodes, and lasted for four years. However, in a world where One Piece is about to go seasonal, I guess anything is possible. After a lengthy absence, Black Clover is finally back, and the anime’s second season is set to adapt the long-awaited Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, an action-packed extravaganza that will certainly allow Asta to return to shonen greatness with a bang.
I wish I could get more excited about this grand return, but there’s just one problem. Studio Pierrot is, self-admittedly, busy with wrapping-up Bleach’s Thousand-Year Blood War series, and though a delay hasn’t been confirmed, there’s a chance we won’t be getting our hands back on Black Clover until late 2026, and potentially, even 2027. Let’s hope that 2026 will continue to home the projected release date for this second season, but considering how shamelessly Pierrot has delayed the Naruto 20th anniversary project, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one pushed-back. If we get Black Clover Season 2 in 2026, then it’s easily one of our most anticipated anime of the year. If we don’t, let this be a lesson to studios to stop announcing projects before they’re ready.
If all goes to plan, Black Clover Season 2 will premiere in 2026.
5. Akane-banashi

I cannot wait for Akane-banashi, an upcoming adaptation of the beloved manga by Yuki Suenaga. Part of what has me so excited for this series is the concept behind its story, and how intriguing it will be to watch that story come to life in the anime format. Akane-banashi tells the story of a young woman who rises in the ‘rakugo’ industry. Rakugo is a Japanese form of storytelling, where a single performer narrates stories, often involving comedy, using props to transform between characters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an anime tell a story using this medium before, and I can’t wait to see how Akane-banashi fares, as it highlights a form of entertainment that is largely unknown to the world outside of Japan.
It’ll certainly be a challenge for Akane-banashi to make waves in the industry, but I’m rooting for its success. Unfortunately, we don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but we do have a teaser trailer, which you can watch here. With the manga hailed as one of the most exciting Shonen Jump series to date, often praised for its heartfelt teaching moments and subversions of audience expectations, here’s hoping that the anime of Akane-banashi can garner similar fan support of its own. One of our most anticipated anime of the year for sure.
Akane-banashi is set to premiere in 2026.
4. Re:ZERO Season 4

What a delight it is to see a season of Re:ZERO returning so soon after the last season went off the air. When it comes to the isekai genre, a medium often mocked by anime fans for its tropes and predictability, I think that there’s no better anime on offer than Re:ZERO, one of the rare isekai to constantly break conventions and subvert expectations. Season 3 was a masterclass, easily one of the most exciting shows to air in recent memory, and it looks like Season 4 is looking to keep the hype going, especially after the last season ended on such an emotional cliffhanger.
If you’re not caught up on Re:ZERO, now is the time. It’s quickly shaping-up to be a modern anime classic, and fans of the novels have claimed that Season 4 may house some of the series’ most intense and rewarding sequences yet. A perfect blend of drama, action, fantasy, and disarmingly-beautiful animation, Re:ZERO is a must-watch, making Re:ZERO Season 4 an easy pick for one of our most anticipated anime of 2026. Be warned! Though this anime may have a charming and magical exterior, Re:ZERO is a brutal ride, filled with death, destruction, and some of the most horrific visuals I’ve ever seen in an anime – that R-rating isn’t there for nothing!
Re:ZERO Season 4 is set to premiere in Spring 2026.
3. Sentenced to Be a Hero

I really don’t know what to make of Sentenced to Be a Hero, and that confusion has me dying to see what this anime brings to the table once it releases. Reviews of the manga are, let’s say, far from encouraging, and yet, the trailer for this has me incredibly excited. The animation of Sentenced to Be a Hero is stunning, and the premise is very interesting. In this world, the most dastardly of criminals are sentenced to become ‘heroes’, who must take on demons. In some ways, this anime sounds like if the characters from Bleach and Demon Slayer really didn’t want to be there, which opens the series up to great comedic potential.
However, there’s also a lot of potential here for some incredible character development, as we watch heinous criminals fight on the side of good. Who knows what this anime has in store? Maybe we’ll see a Demon Slayer situation play out, and Sentenced to Be a Hero‘s anime adaptation will soar above its original manga thanks to the work of Studio KAI? Only time will tell, and luckily, we don’t have long to wait, as Sentenced to Be a Hero claims another spot in the Winter 2026 season – what a jam-packed season of anime!
Sentenced to Be a Hero premieres on January 3, 2026.
2. Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game Part 1

This one was a no-brainer. Jujutsu Kaisen has quickly emerged as one of the strongest shonen series of the 2020s, and now, after one of the most explosive seasons of anime of all time, it’s back for more. The Shibuya Incident Arc was an incredible experience, and having read the manga, I’m glad to report that Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t slow down anytime soon. This next season, titled ‘The Culling Game Part 1’, is filled to the brim with fierce battles, high-stakes situations, and some real shining moments for some of the fanbase’s most beloved characters. If you’re a shonen fan, who by some chance hasn’t seen Jujutsu Kaisen yet, make it your business to catch up before this season hits the airwaves in January.
Fans will remember that the last season of Jujutsu Kaisen, as incredible as it was, was shrouded in controversy, thanks to the policies of MAPPA. Hopefully, we don’t have a repeat of that same situation, with the animation team who bring Jujutsu Kaisen to life being given all the time they need to make ‘The Culling Game’ something special. Surprisingly enough, Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t have too many seasons left to go, so now is the time to get on-board this train, before the journey ends. This is easily our most anticipated anime of the year for the shonen genre, topped only by one very special entry…
Jujutsu Kaisen returns for ‘The Culling Game Part 1’ on January 9, 2026.
1. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2

It was impossible to not award the top spot on our list to Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2, the sequel season to the current highest-rated anime of all time. Plenty of shows have claimed that spot over the years, such as the previously-mentioned Oshi no Ko, but having watched Frieren, I can gladly say that the series’ triumph is well-deserved. This is the pinnacle of fantasy anime, one of the most beautiful adventure series I’ve ever seen, and a thrilling experience for fans of any and all genres. This second season is not to be missed.
I would be surprised if this second season of Frieren could top the original, but who knows? If it manages to, there’s a real argument to be made that this might just be the best anime of all time. Considering the season is releasing in Winter 2026, alongside most of the picks on this list, there’s a lot of competition for it to rise above. However, I have full confidence that Frieren will triumph, and stand out from the crowd as the fantasy masterpiece it is. Easily our most anticipated anime of 2026, and I’m overjoyed that we don’t have long to wait.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 premieres on January 16, 2026.
