Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 Review

Spoiler Review

Rating: 8 out of 10.

While this week’s episode of Peacemaker continued this season’s unfortunate trend of egregiously short runtimes, Episode 6 proves that while Season 2 has been a somewhat erratic time, the show has retained a consistent vision throughout, and this week, we finally see the show begin to move towards its end goal. With only two episodes to go, I’m hoping everything that Peacemaker Season 2 has going on will be able to wrap up nicely, but with some of the bombshells dropped this week, that future is uncertain.

Today, it’s time for our Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 review, ‘Ignorance is Chris’. This will be a spoiler review, so make sure you watch the episode for yourself before reading ahead! This is especially important for this week’s episode, because there are some pretty huge reveals this week. Now, let’s dive into our Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 review!

Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 is a strange episode of television. First off, it’s another very short episode, which worried me from the jump. This is the first in the trilogy of episodes that James Gunn himself has promised will rock fans’ worlds. How much world-rocking can a series do with episodes clocking in at just over 30 minutes? However, Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 does manage to drop some pretty big bombshells throughout its runtime, even if the time in-between these key scenes are filled up with mostly nonsense.

The way I see Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6, it’s an episode comprised of three key scenes, with all of the runtime between these key scenes filled up with comedic banter between the series’ main cast, mostly Peacemaker’s friends, who have now journeyed into this alternate dimension to retrieve their Chris and bring him home. Though we get some pretty major, fan-pleasing moments and reveals in this episode, the first of the three key scenes that I loved was the emotional meeting between Peacemaker and Harcourt, as they finally outrightly discuss their relationship.

As much mayhem that has happened in Peacemaker, it’s always felt like one of the show’s consistent through-lines has been the potential romance between Peacemaker and Harcourt, so in a way, this scene was the most truly plot-relevant moment to happen in Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6. It’s nice to see that even when the DCU has universe-changing cards in its deck, which Episode 6 does, appropriate attention is still awarded to the character-building moments that made the show land in the first place, back when it was still affiliated with the DCEU. It’s easy for the actual plot of comic-book stories to be overshadowed when it comes to showing off cameos or reveals, but luckily, Peacemaker sticks to its guns and recognises its most valuable asset – the cast of loveable characters it’s already worked to build-up.

Now though, let’s talk about the bombshell reveals, both of which make up the remaining two scenes that defined Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 for me. First up is the appearance of Lex Luthor, who, to be quite honest, was the last person I was expecting to show up here. Nicholas Hoult is a busy man after all, and though we’re yet to see if this will be his only appearance in the season, it’s nice to see that the actor is willing to commit to the character outside of blockbuster pictures. As we know from Gunn’s social media, the sequel to Superman will feature Luthor working directly alongside Superman – I wonder if his deal with Rick Flag Sr. in this episode is how he eventually finds his way out of prison? If so, then Peacemaker may have more significant connections to the progression of the DCU than we once thought. Either way, it was great seeing Luthor here, easily one of the standout moments of the episode.

Finally, we jump to the episode’s concluding moments, where the truth about this alternate universe is revealed. If you think we’ve come to the end of the episode quickly, I think that speaks to how non-consequential the vast majority of this episode was. There was a lot of Vigilante comedy this week, so if you like that character, you’ll be in for a treat. I’ve been campaigning for his character to be featured more throughout this entire season so far, but now that he’s here, I wasn’t all that moved by him. As for the reveal though, some fans out there called this weeks ago, but regardless of predictability, I’m still surprised they went through with this.

Peacemaker is, in fact, inhabiting Earth-X, and alternate dimension from DC Comics where the Nazis won the Second World War. Throughout Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6, we notice Harcourt gradually realising that there are no people of colour anywhere to be seen, and in the episode’s final moments, as Adebayo is chased down the street by a vicious mob, and Peacemaker turns over a flag to reveal a Nazi symbol, we realise that Gunn is really going there. The ending of this episode is intense, probably the most on-edge the show has ever had me. Not only is Adebayo is serious danger, but the nature of this world begs the question; ‘where is Judomaster?’. I never thought I would care about that character, but we know the character is Vietnamese, we know he followed Peacemaker into Earth-X, and now, he’s nowhere to be seen. A worrying development for sure.

Ultimately, all I can do at this point is hope that James Gunn handles this story well. While Peacemaker has been known for its sometimes risqué humour, there’s absolutely nothing inherently funny about this storyline. I’m sure Gunn will inject some of his trademark comedy into this whole situation, but I hope it’s done tastefully. This is easily the darkest story that Peacemaker has taken on so far, so I hope the ‘hokeyness’ is toned down, even just a little. At this point, I have no idea what the last two episodes of this season could have in store for us, but here’s hoping that a storyline this sensitive isn’t mishandled.

Overall, Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 is a strong, but short episode. While it features three incredibly compelling, important scenes, the majority of the episode is compiled of comedic banter between the series’ central heroes, banter that sometimes lands, and sometimes misses. Overall, the episode was entertaining throughout, so the lack of consistent substance is forgiven, especially considering how well the episode sets up next week’s outing. I cannot wait to see where this goes – here’s hoping the team behind the series can hold it together, and not get overwhelmed by a storyline that could easily swerve out of control.
