The Cold Witch #3 Review

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 10 out of 10.

Another month, another deep dive into the world of The Shrouded College with the latest addition The Cold Witch #3. First off, it has been a real treat having a new Shrouded College comic drop every month, where previous releases were quite sporadic, having this consistency has made it so easy to get into this series. We are now officially half way through The Cold Witch which means stuff starts to really build in what might be the most explosive comic not only in this series but the entire Shrouded College. Lets talk about that in our The Cold Witch #2 review!

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, although we advise that you read the previous issue before continuing as what we discuss below might spoil that.

Last issue we saw Violleta travel to Siberia on her hunt for The Cold Witch, which brought her to Svitsev, a man seemingly cursed by The Cold Witch who might be the only man alive who can help her find her. In The Cold Witch #3, The Shrouded College close in on Violleta as she continues on the final stretch of her journey – although this is really only the beginning.

The Cold Witch #3 starts off with Svitsev telling Violleta the story of how he took Marco to The Cold Witch, which leads to us seeing Marco’s weird and wonderful powers. I’ll be honest, I did laugh as Marco unhinged his jaw like a snake, but this was truly a brilliant moment. It felt so supernatural and unearthly which sums up The Shrouded College through and through.

This issue was so perfectly paced. I find myself so often knocking comics down a star or two just for being so incredibly slow you can more or less skip it, or too fast that you are left confused as to what just happened, but The Cold Witch #3 did neither. We are given a great deal of context to the story, while being taken on an epic joyride across the Icey Siberian wilderness as Violleta, all while The Shrouded College attempts to contain the situation.

One thing I will say, after reading this comic you can make quite a good guess as to where the story is going. While Charles and Will have done a great job of hiding their tracks and keeping readers guessing, in a shocking twist at the end of the issue, everything seems to click together. If it is heading where I think it is, we are in for a treat over the few remaining issues of this story, and I cannot wait for the big reveal.

My only problem with this issue, is that there was not enough Sebastian. Although Violleta is quickly becoming a favourite of mine, I am not sure if I should trust her, and I am a sucker for a hero. Sebastian is undoubtedly the hero of this universe and I can’t help but want more from him. With that being said, this story is not about Sebastian. This is a story about Love, Revenge, Violleta and of course The Cold Witch, I’m not going to discredit it for sticking to its purpose. Especially when it truly was a flawless addition.

The artwork in The Cold Witch #3 is as brilliant as ever. Will Sliney continues to bring this spectacular world alive with the help of Rachelle Rosenberg’s incredible use of colours to so perfectly set the tones bringing warmth to such a chilling tale. Sliney’s work especially shines during a horrific flashback where the see Marco throwing up some really gross stuff (you will know when you see it). I will not elaborate on that as to preserve the plot, but let me warn you this is some really graphic stuff, it made even me feel unsettled and I have quite a strong stomach for gore – truly remarkable work.

The Cold Witch is coming to its end which means, as previous Shrouded College titles have taught us, everything is about to go nuts. Even if my assumptions are right, I do not think any of us are ready for where this series is about to go. One thing is for sure, I just cannot wait to read through it again once all the issues are out, Hell to Pay is still my favourite comic in The Shrouded College but The Cold Witch is narrowing the gap.

The Cold Witch: A Tale of the Shrouded College #3 is the perfectly pace and the perfect blend of the Horror and Fantasy genres. With the penultimate issue out next, the series is sure to shock readers and exceed all expectations we had for The Cold Witch.
