Upcoming Anime 2024

New Anime Releases to Watch Out For

2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year for anime fans. A successful Winter 2024 anime season is already behind us. Long anticipated projects like the first season of the Solo Leveling anime, combined with continuations of popular anime, including the third season of Classroom of the Elite, alongside some unexpected new fan favorites, such as the ongoing first season of Dungeon Meshi, made for a stellar start to the 2024 anime year. The Spring 2024 anime season is also going strong in its starting weeks. Kaiju No. 8 has gotten off to a strong start, the respective third seasons of KonoSuba and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime are also looking promising in their initial weekly episodes.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting schedule for the new anime coming out this year. But looking beyond these anime which have already started airing, what else does 2024 have in store for us? That’s where this list comes in! Below is a list of some of the anime coming soon throughout 2024 which have caught the attention of anime fans everywhere. New seasons of already popular anime, adaptations of acclaimed manga, and original animated projects with intriguing premises and teasers – this list covers as many bases as we can in an industry that’s currently brimming with quality shows. With that being said, let’s get into the list!

1. Demon Slayer Season 4

2. Moonrise

3. Kimi Ni Todoke Season 3

4. DAN DA DAN
5. Blue Box
6. Suicide Squad Isekai

Demon Slayer Season 4: Hashira Training Arc

If there’s one thing we can count on, it’s that this late addition to the Spring anime 2024 lineup is sure to bring the same high level of quality we’ve come to expect of Demon Slayer. Though the Hashira Training Arc is expected to bring a slower pace to the usually frantic tone of this modern shonen, fans are nonetheless waiting on the edge of their seats to see what Ufotable will bring to table with Demon Slayer Season 4.

The one-hour special premiere of the Hashira Training Arc hits Crunchyroll exclusively on May 12. So, if this one has caught your eye and you’re not quite up-to-date on all the fun and frenzy of Demon Slayer so far, you’ve got just under a month to get all caught up on the action. With Ufotable on animation, and Haruo Sotozaki continuing to direct, the Hashira Training Arc is in good hands.

Moonrise

For fans of the sci-fi genre, Moonrise may just be the 2024 anime for you. So far, we know very little about this upcoming Netflix project. This is an ONA (original net animation), meaning it’s not adapting any source material, and instead, all viewers will be going into it completely fresh. For some anime fans, this can be worrying – there’s no point of reference to set expectations. For others, this is the best type of anime out there – no one can spoil it for you!

While we do know very little about Moonrise, an official teaser has been released by Netflix, and it’s looking like this space epic will be one of those unexpected new anime releases to gain fandom quickly. The talents of WIT Studio are on full display throughout the preview, and fans of Fullmetal Alchemist may find a comforting familiarity in the character designs by Hiromu Arakawa. Check out the teaser now, and tune into Moonrise on Netflix later this year!

Kimi Ni Todoke Season 3

It’s been many years since this romance anime last hit our screens – with season 2 wrapping up in 2011, most fans of Kimi Ni Todoke thought that Sawako and Shouta may never return in anime form. Luckily for those fans, Netflix have announced that Kimi Ni Todoke Season 3 will come to the streaming service in 2024, with Production I.G. returning to animate and the original voice cast reprising their roles.

While prior fans of the show will be sure to tune into this next anime season, fans of romance anime should look to catch up on the first two seasons before Kimi Ni Todoke Season 3 hits Netflix in August 2024. The anime landscape can sometimes be dominated by action and shonen, so seeing a romance shojo like Kimi Ni Todoke getting some hype (and a third season in general) amongst the wave of anime coming soon this year makes for some much needed representation.

DAN DA DAN

This one is exciting. Of all the new anime releases scheduled for 2024, DAN DA DAN promises to be the wackiest. This upcoming October anime is based on the immensely popular Shonen Jump manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, and a read of just the first chapter of this work lets you know that anime viewers are in for a wild ride filled with charisma, comedy, and creativity. A girl who believes in ghosts but not aliens, and a boy who believes in aliens but not ghosts, each encounter paranormal creatures, and from there, craziness ensues.

If you need convincing of how strange these creatures are, you can check out the anime’s official trailer – if the presence of Yoshimichi Kameda (Mob Psycho 100) in charge of creature design for this project isn’t enough, I’m sure their…’to-the-point’ dialogue will tell you all you need to know. With music by Kensuke Ushio (Chainsaw Man, A Silent Voice), series composition by Hiroshi Seko (Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen), and animation in the hands of Science SARU, DAN DA DAN is looking like one to mark on your calendar. Excitingly, both Crunchyroll and Netflix will be streaming the show starting in October! Get ready for the madness!

Blue Box

A unique blend of the romance, comedy, and sports genres, Kouji Miura’s Blue Box manga has found itself receiving high praise since its debut in 2021 – and now, only three years later, it’s being brought to life. While on the surface, Blue Box may seem like a run-of-the-mill romance anime, fans of sports anime will be glad to hear that when the story leans into our protagonists’ respective hobbies, (badminton and basketball), we can expect all the mainstays of other sports anime favorites to come into play – fierce competition, relatable rivalries, and teamwork in the heat of the moment.

Blue Box’s first anime season premieres in October of this year, and if its success in Shonen Jump is anything to go by, this will be one to watch for all fans of the genre. Telecom’s animation promises to be stunning, and with Yūko Kakihara handling series composition fresh off of her work on the exceedingly well-received first season of The Apothecary Diaries, the already established Blue Box fanbase is in good hands, and will likely be welcoming many new members soon!

Suicide Squad Isekai

Would any anime list be complete without at least one isekai? Of all the animes coming out in 2024, this one is perhaps the most unexpected. The announcement that Warner Bros. Japan would be partnering with WIT Studio to bring DC’s notorious supervillain team to the anime world caught many fans off-guard – though the surprise is not necessarily unwelcome. The anime’s official trailer confirms that the show will provide the type of brutally chaotic environment that the Suicide Squad thrives in, balanced by our protagonists(?) infectiously fun energy.

While some anime fans may groan at the thought of another new anime plagued by the often unbearable tropes of the isekai genre, Tappei Nagatsuki, author of the incredibly popular Re:Zero, will be teaming up with Eiji Umehara to helm the screenplay. The two have previously worked together on the universally acclaimed Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song, and Nagatsuki’s established mastery of the isekai genre should ease many fans’ worries – at least until we see the first episode in action. Suicide Squad Isekai is set to premiere in July 2024 – anime fans and DC fans alike, mark the date!

My Hero Academia Season 7

In the years since its release, My Hero Academia has remained one of the most controversial and polarizing shonen titles in the industry. For every fan of the show, there seems to be a counterpart, ready to discredit the anime’s success. Though opinions on its quality may vary, one thing is undeniable – My Hero Academia Season 7 remains one of the most anticipated new anime releases scheduled for 2024. With the hit show’s sixth season ending on a cliffhanger, fans are ready to swarm to Crunchyroll on May 4 for the seventh season’s premiere episode, making it one of the most anticipated Spring 2024 anime out there.

Bones will return to animate, and if My Hero Academia Season 7 is able to maintain the high-stakes action and dramatic tone that the sixth season managed to capture, then fans will be in for a treat. Despite its rocky reputation, My Hero Academia has become a mainstay in the shonen genre. For those of you who’s interest has been piqued, and might be looking to catch up on all the superpowered shenanigans, you’ve got a long road ahead of you – 138 episodes to be exact. If you can conquer that though, we’ll see you in Season 7!

Oshi No Ko Season 2

In recent memory, few shows have rocked the anime industry more than the first season of Oshi No Ko. When the adaptation of Aka Akasaka’s manga was announced as part of the Spring 2023 anime lineup, viewers expected that it would find some success, mainly due to Akasaka’s prior success with the anime adaptation of Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War. What viewers may not have expected was for the one-hour special premiere of Oshi No Ko to skyrocket the anime’s popularity straight to the top of the industry, with the show soon taking the top rated spot on MyAnimeList.

While the anime was not able to maintain that rating in the long run, the fanbase of Oshi No Ko has certainly not dwindled, and fans are anxious to see where Aqua’s revenge play will take him and his sister, Ruby, next. The second season of this hit anime promises to be one of the most talked about new anime releases of 2024. Expect more mystery, mindgames, comedy, and of course, more poignant commentary on the highs and lows of Japan’s entertainment industry. Oshi No Ko Season 2 premieres in the Summer 2024 anime season.

Time-Patrol Bon

It’s always exciting when a manga from generations past gets a modern anime adaptation. It’s even more exciting when those anime have as fascinating a premise as Time-Patrol Bon. Based on the manga by Fujiko F. Fujio, which began publishing as early as the late 1970s, this collaboration between animation studio Bones and Netflix is oozing with that charming classic anime feel that many modern shows lack. But don’t let it’s comforting, fantasy anime exterior fool you – Time-Patrol Bon’s premise of a team of time travelers returning to significant historical events in an attempt to save as many lives as possible implies that this one could get dark – and based on the grittiness and emotional tone of the anime’s official trailer, that implication may be a reality.

The anime will be released on Netflix this Summer in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of manga author Fujiko F. Fujio’s birth. The show is scheduled for two seasons, and excitingly, both seasons will be dropping this year, in true Netflix binge fashion. Season one is set to release on May 2, while the second season will follow soon after on July 17. If you’re not convinced that this one is for you, I would encourage you to check out the official trailer Netflix have released for the project. If done right, this could shape up to be one of the best anime of 2024.

Dragon Ball DAIMA

When Dragon Ball DAIMA was originally announced at New York Comic Con 2023, it was met with mixed responses. Many Dragon Ball fans wanted nothing to do with the project, expecting an announcement of a continuation of Dragon Ball Super. Others were worried by the show’s premise – seeing Goku and friends turned into children reminded some fans of the controversial Dragon Ball GT. As more information has been revealed about the project however, it seems like Dragon Ball DAIMA may achieve GT’s initial goal of recapturing the magic of the original Dragon Ball from 1989.

Airing this October in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Ball manga’s original publication in 1984, and with direct involvement promised from original creator Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball DAIMA may not be the next step for the franchise that fans expected, but if the anime can pull off even a fraction of the original series’ whimsical feel, viewers will be in for a nostalgia-filled adventure with these classic characters. The anime will also act as a send-off for Toriyama, who passed away in March 2024 – his direct involvement in this project marks his final contribution to an industry that he was essential in building, making this one special for Dragon Ball fans, and shonen fans in general, across the globe.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 – The Conflict

Very few anime out there have seen a revival quite like Bleach. The original series, a member of the prestigious ‘Big 3’ alongside Naruto and One Piece, came to an abrupt end in 2012. Whether this was due to low ratings, low sales, or a lack of manga content to adapt is debated, but fans of the franchise were left devastated by its unceremonious end nonetheless. That was, until the shonen classic burst back onto the scene in late 2022, with Studio Pierrot heading a stellar adaptation of the manga’s Thousand-Year Blood War arc. For those of you who have seen the first two parts of this adaptation, you know that part 3 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated anime coming out in 2024. For those of you who haven’t, it may be time to get into Bleach.

The stakes have never been higher for Ichigo and his fellow Soul Reapers, and having left fans on a ridiculous cliffhanger at the end of part 2, Pierrot need do nothing more than uphold the quality they’ve been bringing to the table with Bleach thus far to ensure that part 3 is one of the most celebrated 2024 anime releases. Like previous seasons, fans can expect part 3 to stream to Disney+ sometime later this year – this is one of those anime release dates that Pierrot will likely spring on us very soon before it airs, so I would say to expect a premiere sometime in the Fall, though Summer is possible.

Uzumaki

Speaking of anime release dates, this final entry is a little bit of a cheat on my part. While I sincerely hope that Uzumaki finally hits our screens in 2024, Drive’s project has been faced with repeated indefinite delays. The anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror classic was originally pushed back, set to air on Adult Swim in 2022, with the animation team citing the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the delay. Now, in 2024, all we know is that the project has been delayed indefinitely. So, while we can’t mark an exact date just yet on our anime calendar, 2024 is just getting started, and I, like many other Ito fans, are hoping that this one will see the light of day this year.

Ito’s 1998 classic manga has remained a staple in the Japanese horror industry since its release, and with the author’s material being notoriously difficult to adapt, Uzumaki’s trailers have been successful in convincing fans that Drive’s adaptation will be the one to do Ito’s nightmarish imagery the justice it deserves. For now though, all we can do is wait, and cross our fingers that 2024 will be the year that Uzumaki comes to life. In the meantime, I cannot recommend the original manga enough to any horror fans out there. Get reading, and then join the rest of us in the long wait for this masterclass in fear to hit our screens.
