Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 8 out of 10.

It’s Wednesday, you know what that means… a fresh load of comic books just dropped. With the release of the new Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Disney Plus series right around the corner, it seemed fitting to read the next instalment of the comic that accompanies the show, and so here is our Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2025) #2 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, though we recommend you check out the previous issue before continuing. You have been warned true believers, let’s get into the review!

The Review

Last issue we saw Peter Parker explore his powers, and although the previous issue teased a Spidey suit at the start, for most of the issue he was just plain old Peter. In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 we see Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man after realising what good he could do with his powers.

This series continues to feel very nostalgic and that is simply because they are mostly respecting Spider-Mans origins, especially in this issue. As readers might have gathered, Spidey takes to the wrestling ring in his pieced together suit to really push himself to the limits, a storyline which has become pretty much an anchor point in his origin. I would be lying if I said I did not audibly sigh when I first opened this issue as it’s part of a story I have read a thousand times before – however, I still enjoyed it. Luckily enough, the notorious wrestling scene does not last as long as you would expect leaving more time for character growth and story development that we did want and is also treated as more of a homage to the Spider-Man we know and love.

In the first issue, towards the end Peter felt way too comfortable in his powers already, so it was great to see him so clumsy in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2. At this point in his journey, he would absolutely be clumsy and fall further than he could swing, him realising that this is the key to his growth as a hero.

One thing Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 has got right is the artwork. I am fairly new to Eric Gapstur’s work, but you can tell this is someone who was inspired by classic comics that some of you may have read as a kid which makes it so hard not to love – on top of that it flows so well with the upcoming series, providing a seamless experience.

I will say, though Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man comics started as a prequel to the series, there are a few developments which might not make complete sense if viewers have not read these comics first, which means that it is quite possible we could get some crossover in later issues. I have no idea where the series picks up from, so this is completely speculative and I am hoping this is not the case but we can cross that bridge when we get to it.

So far the series is pretty great, it feels very much like a modern adaption of a Spider-Man comic and with that I am sold. It is hard to say yet how well this works as a prequel to the upcoming series but all those involved have done superbly even if this was a standalone comic.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 has once again captivated its readers with an interesting narrative and nostalgic scenes. It is a real shame that this is only a 5 part series as it is so well executed, with it being one of the most authentic Spider-Man comics I have read in a while now, but it will be interesting to see how the show fits in with the comics.

Let us know your thoughts on the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2! Will you be watching the Disney Plus series? Or would you prefer to read more of this story? Whatever your thoughts and feelings, let us know in the comment section of this article!
