Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.

Here we are again, another new comic book day, another Absolute title to add to the collection! This week, we take a deep dive into the world of Absolute Flash, in the latest issue, Absolute Flash #3. In this issue, our speedster slows down a little giving us time to take everything from the previous issues in, and see Wally develop as a character, which has given us a lot to talk about in this Absolute Flash #3 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, although we do recommend you read the previous issue before continuing.

In the previous issues of Absolute Flash, we have seen Wally on the run, being tracked down by Captain Cold and his team, who were sent by his father. In Absolute Flash #3, Wally begins to get tired of running, until he meets a friend – and that friend is none other than iconic Flash villain… Grodd.

Let me start by saying, I love this version of Grodd. He is just so innocent and sweet, I cannot wait to see their friendship blossom. When Absolute Flash #2 left us with Grodd being left outside of his cage, I was expecting him to be a threat to Barry. One look at this comic cover, however, and you know that is not the case, and while I will not spoil it for you, they already have managed to build an admirable bond between the two, which you will only want to see strengthen as the series goes on. Superman has Krypto – I suppose it is only fair Wally gets his own super pet.

One thing which remains consistent throughout the Absolute universe is the horror element of these comics, but this one really surprised me. Seeing a zombified Barry Allen reaching out for help was so unsettling, and quite honestly made me look at The Flash in a completely different way – it is certainly no longer the cheesiest of DC comics. Though we have had a glimpse of the horror we might see in Absolute Flash in previous issues, nothing has been quite so gruesome thus far, but now that we’ve gotten this, the bar has been set high. We cannot wait to see more exceptional panels like the one below.

It is not just the horror panels where the artwork shines, Nick Robles artwork is continuously fantastic, and complimented so well by the colours Adriano Lucas has chosen. Honestly, this issue has some of the most incredible artwork we’ve seen, not just in Absolute Flash, but in the entire Absolute series.

You might think I have talked about the artwork a lot here, and I have, but that is simply because Absolute Flash #3 does not advance the story very much. It ends with a moment which was supposed to be epic, the big reveal, but it just kind of makes the past 3 issues feel like an intro. While that is not necessarily a bad thing (they do serve as a great introduction to the series), it was a little underwhelming – for a Flash comic, everything sure does move quite slowly.

All in all, Absolute Flash #3 is a good comic. However, there is still something missing for me in this series and I simply cannot place my finger on it. Perhaps it is not just one thing, but instead the comic, as a whole, could just be that tiny bit better. It has the potential to be something spectacular, but in regards to the story, it is just not quite hitting that full potential yet – although I believe it will only get better.

Absolute Flash #3 is another visually stunning, unique and great addition to the Absolute Flash series. Though there is still much room for growth, Absolute Flash is getting better with every new issue and has all the groundwork there to becoming an exceptional comic with something big surely on the horizon.
