Absolute Green Lantern #1 Review

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.

Over the last month, the Absolute universe has expanded massively adding new takes on even more beloved characters. Today is no different as we finally dive into the world of the Green Lanterns. Absolute Green Lantern takes brings us our second female lead in the Absolute universe, Sojourner “Jo” Mullein. With comic books being so dominated by male main characters, I could not be more excited to dive into this one. There was plenty to talk about with this first issue so let’s get right in to the Absolute Green Lantern #1 review.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, we will be discussing the main premise of this comic, but any important details we will be sure to leave out.

Like the rest of the Absolute comics, Absolute Green Lantern #1 has some very different key points. There is no Green Lantern Corps, no power ring, and an unexplained unearthly power which lends a hand (pun intended) to a horror element which has not yet been explored in Green Lantern.

Firstly Sojourner (Jo), as the lead character is such a great choice! We are all far too used to seeing Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner as the hero, its such a great opportunity for such a diverse character like Jo to shine. Of course as the cover art suggests, Hal Jordan is a big part of Absolute Green Lantern as are many other beloved characters from Green Lantern. But their story is not the one to tell, which will give this comic a completely different vibe.

Unfortunately, Absolute Green Lantern #1 focuses primarily on Hal Jordon so we will have to wait till next month to see what Jo has to offer. This is a much darker version of Hal however, which makes it unique and still an interesting read, it was just slightly disappointing to see considering how much it had been hyped up for Jo to be the lead.

The artwork is so beautiful, with hints of green exploding throughout – you really feel like you are reading a Green Lantern comic – Jahnoy Lindsay did a serious impressive job of bringing this one to life. It is quite unique from the other Absolute comics, fairly comparable to the Jujutsu Kaisen manga just in colour, which honestly was very satisfying.

Absolute Green Lantern does have a horror feel to it, while still in many ways respecting its origins of being a superhero comic – Absolute Martian Manhunter went too far the other way, this was the perfect balance. I am unsure why they chose to take this route with Hal Jordon however when it might be better suited for someone like John Constantine, but either way it was interesting enough to me invested in the series enough to see where this is going.

With that being said, Absolute Green Lantern #1 felt much too brief and left me just a little confused, though I am sure everything will make sense soon enough. There are sure to be some exciting developments ahead, but for now I will give this issue a respectable 7.5!

Absolute Green Lantern #1 is a beautifully designed comic which showcases an interesting narrative for the Absolute Green Lantern comics. Though it might be far from what was expected, this comic is as interesting and brilliant as the rest of the Absolute series – a worthy addition.

What are your thoughts on Absolute Green Lantern #1? Is Sojourner a strong enough character to move the series forward by herself? Whatever your thoughts and feelings, share them with us in the comment section of this article.
