Absolute Wonder Woman #4

Spoiler Free Review

Rating: 9 out of 10.

The Absolute universe continues today with the next issue of Absolute Wonder Woman, which means it is time for our Absolute Wonder Woman #4 review! Last issue we had some very much unexpected twists, which will finally be explored today. While I have been open with the fact this comic has been my least favourite in the Absolute universe, with every issue I have grown more fond of the series – not to say it was not always brilliant, just the others resonate with me a little more. Absolute Wonder Woman #4 is even better than Issue 3 and provides a much deeper storyline than anything released so far in the Absolute universe, so we have a lot to talk about.

In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, but make sure you have read through the previous issues before continuing. This is the only warning I will give you of this, you have been warned.

The Review

The Tetracide still torments the people of Gateway city, who are now left deafened and helpless as Wonder Woman finds a way to make herself whole again – quite literally. After a long battle with the Tetracide, Diana had her magical arm ripped from her body leaving her powerless against the beast. Time is now of the essence and humanity is more at risk than ever before.

The last issue taught us of the sacrifices Diana is willing to take in order to save humanity, after sacrificing her arm. This issue, in many ways, felt like it was back pedalling. After being so nonchalant about losing her magical arm, in Absolute Wonder Woman #4 we now see Diana on a quest to get it back – while her motives make sense, this was quite an unexpected direction.

With that being said, the issue quickly picks up pace and packs a much more powerful punch than Wonder Woman herself. Most of Absolute Wonder Woman #4 plays out with Diana narrating, since the city is temporarily deaf and interactions with other people were expected to be limited. This gave us a chance to get to know our hero more and really set an epic tone to the end battle. We do, however, have the opportunity to meet this universe’s Etta, and a brilliant witch called Gia – more of Gia please DC, she was so easy to love and simply brilliant.

Once again, in Absolute Wonder Woman #4 we get another look at Diana’s relationship with her adopted mother, Circe. These parts of the story are where I believe Absolute Wonder Woman shines. With Absolute Batman and Absolute Superman we look to the current times, but Absolute Wonder Woman does not rely on that. We gain important developments each issue in the present, but the real story here is about Wonder Woman and how she became who she is today.

Though I am sure, with time, the flashbacks may dwindle, this is an origin story I am fully sold on and is perhaps more compelling than that of Batman and Superman in the Absolute universe – a statement I never thought I would write.

However, you may have noticed from the rating on the article, I was not completely satisfied with Absolute Wonder Woman #4. The reason simply being because anything in the present day is over too quickly to gain a sense of urgency – though as I previously said the flashbacks are where this series shines, they still play a bigger part in the Absolute universe as a whole and therefore are quite important. If an Absolute Justice League is to happen, would Wonder Woman would simply slice Darkseid in half at this current pace? That is just not something I would find too satisfying, so for the sake of these brilliant characters teaming up, I believe Diana would have to slow down drastically.

It is important our heroes fail from time to time to build their character, this issue was Absolute Wonder Woman’s first instance of that and I would have liked to see her struggle a little more than she had done.

Absolute Wonder Woman #4 continues to give us an exceptional origin story with beautiful artwork and incredible action scenes. Though overall this comic is fantastic, it leaves us with the impression that Wonder Woman is potentially the most powerful being on the planet and quite frankly, may be over much quicker than hoped for.
