Best Comics Released in 2024
This year ended up being one of the best for comic book releases. With releases of long awaited sequels and some unique twists on fan favourites, this year has left readers with no short of different genres. There are some however that stand out more than others, some that will stick with you for many years to come, and not just 2025.
In this article, we are going to take a look at the best comics released in 2024. Hopefully next year will be filled with more hidden gems and give us even more to indulge.
Absolute Batman

It is probably no secret by now that I am in love with the Absolute universe, after all I have been covering the entire universe almost weekly. One Absolute comic that deserves a lot of praise is of course, the comic that kick-started the universe, Absolute Batman. This dark and unique Batman comic with an incredible narrative and shocking plot twists, has been a focal point of conversation since the first issue dropped – I have recommended it to multiple friends and received nothing but positive feedback from all of them and even sparked a new interest in comic books for some.
I’ve said it once, I will say it again, Absolute Batman is the best comic to release in 2024 – if you haven’t read it yet, do yourself a favour and pick it up.
Ultimate Spider-Man

Next up, we have another a comic which puts unique twist on beloved characters, Ultimate Spider-Man. Ultimate Spider-Man follows a much older Spider-Man who is married to the love of his life MJ, and has two kids. If that was not enough to peak your interest, this universe depicts Green Goblin as a superhero, an idea not too dissimilar from the final scenes of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 – this Green Goblin is so easy to love with his Red Hood type armour and mannerisms.
Issue 12 just released at the time of writing this article, so there is still time to catch up on the series, which we would highly recommend you do.
The Bloody Dozen

Vampires in space might seem like a weird concept, not so much when so perfectly executed by Charlie Soule and Will Sliney in The Bloody Dozen. This second instalment of The Shrouded College, was a strong start to what turned out to be one of the best years for comic books. Issue 1 was released December 2023 but the finale (issue 6) was the real winner in this series, expanding on the corruption of The Shrouded College and concluded in a completely unexpected way.
The Bloody Dozen is another comic I have spoken about this year already, in our horror comics article, I have no doubt we will cover part 3 of The Shrouded College when it finally releases.
Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween

A long awaited sequel to The Long Halloween, The Last Halloween finally released in 2024, and all I can say is wow. Due to the sudden passing of iconic comic book artist Tim Sale in 2022, The Last Halloween quickly turned into a work of nostalgia to honour his memory – it really does hold up to the iconic universe The Long Halloween created.
I will say, this comic was a hard one to read as a diehard Batman fan – you can feel the impact Tim Sale had on Jeph Loeb while they worked together and to see Loeb conclude this fantastic universe without him feels bittersweet.
Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace – Anniversary Special

Though it might be a point of controversy for Star Wars fans, The Phantom Menace turned 25 this year and in celebration got a special Anniversary Special comic where we got a whole new story about young Anakin Skywalker whilst simultaneously being punched in the face by nostalgia. I was amongst the majority of fans who was not thoroughly impressed by The Phantom Menace, though I’ll admit that the incredible Darth Maul fight scene at the end still lives rent free in my head, but a Star Wars comic never steered me wrong – this one was no exception to that rule, truly incredible.
Will Sliney is more than worthy of a second mention on this list, he is undoubtedly my favourite penciller in recent years, having him work with Greg Pak (the writer of Star Wars: Darth Vader) was nothing short of a match made in heaven.
Venom War: It’s Jeff

A character both hated and loved in the Marvel Rivals community, Jeff the Land Shark, made an unexpected return in 2024. Jeff is known for making appearances alongside other Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man and the X-Men, but one that stood out the most was Venom War: It’s Jeff, where we saw him donning with the iconic space symbiote to become the most jacked up shark you have ever seen. I seriously can’t help but love this guy, he is almost as cute as Krypto the Superdog. The comic itself is very light-hearted and offers a nice breather between the more gripping and stressful stories that were released throughout the year.
If you have not read this, do yourself a favour and read it, it’s just so silly and fun – what’s not to love about it honestly.
Conclusion
2024 was a great year for comics. Although we only listed a few above, there was so much more 2024 had to offer and will honestly be a tough one to follow. Luckily enough we still have some of the best comics from this year releasing monthly and do not seem to be getting any worse throughout the issues, with plenty of new ones to come, including the next Absolute instalments Absolute Flash and Absolute Green Lantern.

Phantom menace serves as a great companion to the main DARTH VADER series.
