It’s the most wonderful time of the year again… no, not Christmas, it’s Free Comic Book Day 2025! If you are new to the scene let me just give you a brief explanation, Free Comic Book Day is a day full of free special issues from all different comic book series – from Marvel, to DC, to Transformers, there is just about something for everyone.
In this article, we will be looking at the best comic books that Free Comic Book Day 2025 has to offer! The list of comics releasing today is quite a long one so unfortunately we could not include everything, but if you want to see more, check out the free comic book day website. Let’s get into the list!
Absolute Universe Special Edition #1

Starting the list off strong, is another incredible title from the DC All In Initiative. When an asteroid rapidly approaches Earth, Superman is tasked with destroying it before it destroys humanity. However, things are not as they seem on the surface and a new challenge arises for Superman. Sounds good right? Well you will be pleased to know you don’t even need to leave the house to read Absolute Universe Special Edition #1 as it is already available online on Amazon (thank you DC for a great read with breakfast this morning).
Not only does this issue acts as a prelude for the upcoming series Superman Unlimited starting May 21st, but it brings new depth and links the Absolute comics together – a moment I and surely a lot of fans have all been waiting for. This comic got me so excited for the Absolute universe, a strong start for Free Comic Book Day 2025
Amazing Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe #1

Next up, we have Amazing Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe #1! In Ultimate Universe #1 Miles Morales is given a key to a new universe, a fresh start – as Miles reflects on previous conflicts, this option does seen very appealing. However, nothing is ever easy for Spider-Man and… that’s about all I’ll give you (go read the comic, IT’S FREE)!
This issue acts as a prelude for the upcoming series Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion starting June 4th, a Miles Morales lead adventure featuring alternatives of some iconic characters including Wolverine and Doctor Doom. If it sounds like Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion, this is definitely the one for you.
Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures/Avatar: The Last Airbender

Of course, Free Comic Book Day is not just for us ancient fans, so here is one for the kids! Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures follows Jedi younglings Kai, Lys and Nubs as they complete a scavenger hunt set up by Master Yoda. As the three complete their tasks, they stumble upon an unlikely friend and learn a valuable lesson.
Included in this issue is a special short story from Avatar: The Last Airbender – a true selling point for me – featuring Samurai Appa and Ronin Momo trying to score themselves a free lunch. Though short, this story was very fun and will be please to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans of all ages.
Star Wars #1

Now for the older Star Wars fans, Star Wars #1. This issue contains 3 different stories featuring many icons of the series. Luke Skywalker facing off against pirates, Qui-Gon Jinn and Tensu Run tracking down Corlis Rath, and the backstory to Vanee – this comic has a lot to offer.
The Legacy of Vanee storyline in this issue is probably the most important one as it gives more depth to Vanee from the ongoing series Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, but the other two were still a really good read and represented the universe well.
Black Mirror #1

Finally, a completely unexpected entry on this list, the first ever Black Mirror comic. This issue is based on the San Junipero episode of the show and follows the story of two girls visiting a fun-loving beach town whose lives are about to change forever. This is only one story the Black Mirror graphic novel will have to offer with many more episodes expected to be adapted, but it is sure to get you excited about that!
I did not know what to expect going into this, but since it was free, and I love both comics and Black Mirror, I figured I would give it a go – it did not disappoint. Seeing brilliant episode in this black and white pencilled art style gives it a dark and grittier tone the TV series could never possibly achieve.
Conclusion
Free Comic Book Day 2025 has a lot to offer with just some of the best listed above! Be sure to check out your local participating comic book stores and online shops and let us know your favourites in the comments of this article!
