Lex and the City #1
Spoiler Free Review
With Valentine’s Day just round the corner, it’s about the time we get some obscure romance themed one shot comics, which means it’s our duty to review them – this week we have found ourselves tasked with a Lex and the City #1 review. As ridiculous as it may sound at first, Lex and the City is such a hilarious concept, I would be lying if I said this wasn’t a fun one to read. There is however a lot of it, 80 pages to be exact, so as expected it’s is not all perfect sadly, but we will get to that.
In Nerdy Nook fashion, this review will be spoiler free, though as a gimmicky one shot, there is not really a lot to spoil.
The Review

Lex and the City is an anthology of eight different stories of various beloved DC characters in the pursuit of love, including Lex Luthor, Raven, Beast Boy and Tim Drake. The comic starts with Lex Luthor finding a spark with a columnist from The Daily Planet, Trish Q, while his foe Superman is currently off planet – the perfect time to pursue love.
Lex and the City is every bit as ridiculous as you would expect and yet, somehow, offers several interesting storylines. With all the characters free from their usual obligations, this comic gives us a closer look into their personal lives and ultimately how hard it might be for superheroes and villains to find the time for romance which, in many ways, makes them more personable than before.
In a weird way, Lex’s feelings towards Superman can sometimes come across as a sort of infatuation, which really gives this story an interesting choice of directions and lives up to its parodic title and the stories seen in Sex and the City.

Admittedly, I am not too often left feeling content by things of the romantic nature. Of course I do enjoy the odd romance scene and love the occasional rom com (my favourite movie of all time is Just Married), but when it comes to literature, I find myself more fulfilled by action and adventure – Lex and the City is, of course, an exception.
One story I did however not enjoy was the Damian Wayne and Tim Drake storyline To Live and Date in Gotham. As promised I will not give any spoilers, but I will say everything in this comic felt somewhat authentic except this storyline. It was of course still a fun idea but it felt more cheesy than the rest, almost like something straight out of the 60’s Batman show. Since Batman is my favourite part of DC, I wanted so much to love this storyline but sadly it was just not for me I’m afraid.
Beast Boy and Raven’s story Roses Are Red… Blood Is, Too on the other hand, was a very fun and satisfying read – despite being called Lex and the City, their part was the second best part of this one shot, right after Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy’s story A Valentine’s Day Gift for Poison Ivy of course.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have been one of the most talked about and beloved couples since first being officially coupled together in 2016. The Joker and Harley Quinn’s dynamic was a highly toxic one, and while at the time it was important to their character growth, it was quite a hard to read sometimes, causing distress for a lot of readers. In comparison, Harley’s relationship with Poison Ivy is far more romantic and wholesome. Seeing this perfect power couple together again really made Lex and the City an enjoyable read and fit the Valentine’s aesthetic so perfectly.

Lex and the City 1 is the romantic comic book we have all been waiting for. Having a romantic setting so cleverly perceived in such a fun way in a universe we simply adore, checks all the right boxes and will do for many fans.
