Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Spoiler Free Review
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 just launched in UK cinemas at supersonic speed! Fans have been waiting 2 years for this film to finally release, with the return of Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik and the arrival of yet another iconic character from the Sonic franchise, there was just so much to look forward to. Without giving anything away, I can say with full confidence, it was worth every second of waiting.
In Nerdy Nook fashion, we will not be revealing any of the main plot points from the movie. However, since this is a sequel, make sure you have seen the other movies before you continue reading this article. We have a lot to talk about so, with haste, let’s get into the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 review.
The Review

The end of the last movie teased the arrival of Shadow the Hedgehog which is, as expected, where Sonic the Hedgehog 3 picks up. We start off seeing Sonic, Tails and Knuckles enjoying their casual life with the Wachowski’s before being interrupted by G.U.N who needs help in Japan dealing with Shadow’s breakout. Team Sonic quickly realise they are in way over their heads and seek the help of none other than Doctor Robotnik.
Let me just come right out and say it, I loved almost everything about this movie. It was such a perfect masterpiece and is definitely the best movie in the franchise so far – Paramount really found their footing with this one. I was originally sceptical about Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, but after watching Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it is quite an impossible task to name someone else so perfect for the role – his performance felt so true to the character and was nothing short of perfection.
Tom and Maddie Wachowski both return in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but have very minimal amount of screen time compared to the previous instalments. Though I was marginally disappointed by this, the scenes they did have were very well received – looking back on it, it probably would have felt out of place to have them in any more scenes than they had. In fact the movie was kind of better with them being in it less – it felt more like a Team Sonic movie just as it should.
Doctor Robotnik’s video game accurate outfit and appearance brought me much excitement, this is something they have been slowly building with each movie and it feels so incredible to see the Eggman I have known and loved for many years appear on the big screen.

As I said earlier, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is almost perfect. Unfortunately, there were a few moments that felt disingenuous, but regardless there were still so many emotional scenes in this movie, which were just heartfelt and lovely. One scene in particular did feel like it was added just to be a call back in the final moments of the movie, a very obvious choice, but it was used effectively to move the story forward despite maybe not being needed.
One thing fans would have noticed is that Shadow and Gerald Robotnik’s relationship is slightly different than usual. This was not necessarily a bad thing but it took me back a little when we found out Shadow’s origin story in this universe.
I was concerned for people who might not have watched the Knuckles TV show before seeing this movie, but much to my delight there was nothing to be worried about. There was a short and amusing throwback to the series, but unlike Marvel, the scene does not go amiss if you have not seen the show – stop doing that Marvel, please, for the last time.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have a habit of setting up the next sequel in a post credit scene. This movie is no different, and while we will not be spoiling that for you, we can almost guarantee Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will be in production in no time. Though it is unclear whether or not Jim Carrey will return to the franchise to once again play Doctor Robotnik since he is supposed to be retired (?) but given the movies release patterns, we can expect to see Sonic the Hedgehog 4 hit the cinemas late 2026 to mid 2027 – though the latter would be more my guess.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 showed such a depth and creativity, it could possibly be the best movie to release in 2024 – it was, at least, the best movie I have seen this year. The characters (mostly) stayed true to their origins and developed more than ever before, we simply cannot wait for the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
What are your thoughts on the movie? Who would you like to see make an appearance in the series next? Whatever it is, let us know in the comment section of this article. I will happily discuss Sonic related topics all day and night!
