How to Grow on Twitch with Sarahgeee

Streamer Spotlight 1

Hello dear readers, welcome to the first article in our Streamer Spotlight column. As many of you will know, I am a streamer myself and so I have wanted to bring my two world’s together for quite some time. In this column, it is our goal to not only spotlight some of Twitch’s hidden gems but gather some insights into how these streamers grew to where they are today and ultimately help some of you learn how to grow as a streamer too.

In this article I interviewed one of my friends and favourite streamers, Sarahgeee – let’s see what she had to say!

I first met Sarahgeee a few years ago from a raid, and it’s still a day I remember. My first interaction with her, she was responding to me like I was someone she had met before, sharing pictures of when her and a friend were dressed kind of like Jay and Silent Bob – I had never felt such an instant feeling of belonging before. Sarahgeee is a very energetic (sometimes chaotic) variety streamer, but her personality shines in the early mornings in the Just Chatting category. After 7 years of streaming Sarahgeee has achieved over 36,000 followers and as soon as you join her stream you’ll see why – it really is hard to not follow her. But how did it all begin?

“I got a gaming PC in 2016 after a long gaming/internet hiatus, and became hooked on League of Legends. I was playing in my spare time and discovered Twitch shortly before. I genuinely started streaming because I figured why not make something I am doing in my spare time a little more social”. It’s interesting that Sarahgeee’s reasons for starting were exactly the same reasons I had, and I imagine, some of you share that same thought process too – Twitch is a great place to meet like minded people after all.

However, did she ever know that 7 years down the line she would being doing it as her fulltime career? “Not at all! It was entirely a hobby and I never strived to be a ‘content creator’ – I was enjoying what I was doing then I started to see a bit of growth and success, so I just went with the flow and continued.” Unfortunately, it can’t always be smooth sailing and with every stream comes a new set of challenges.

“Technical difficulties are inevitable”, and sometimes they can honestly be the least of your worries, but Sarahgeee is very good with dealing with interruptive chatters – for her it’s the tech issues that grind her gears the most. “It is hard to deal with things like that live, and I have definitely struggled at times with handling them without frustration, but my advice to others would be to just continue on, and make the best of things. The majority of the time, whatever issue is happening, whether it be a tech issue, poor gameplay, a stream not going as planned, etc, your audience is more than likely MUCH less bothered by the issue than you are”.

“Continue on”, probably the best words a smaller streamer can possibly hear. When you first start you may think ‘why is no one watching me’ and often its not any fault of your own, especially since you are not really give a lot of tools to help with your growth on Twitch… but who said you only have to use Twitch to grow? “Most streamers use outside platforms to grow an initial audience in current times” and using TikTok, Instagram or X can contribute to a lot of success. Even setting up your own Discord server, continuing to build a community off stream, then having them there when you go live will be much more beneficial for you than nothing at all.

In conclusion, if you want to follow in Sarahgeee’s footsteps, stream because you want to, (without the intention of trying to be famous), trust your gut and go with the flow. Remember, anytime you feel like things aren’t going so well, your audience are much less bothered by the issues than you are so remain calm and collective and try to put your content first. To begin with, try to stay clear of oversaturated games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto until you have established a small community who will follow you there.

Most importantly though, if you really want to grow on Twitch, “continue on” and have fun with what you are doing – let your personality shine just like Sarahgeee does.

If you found this article useful, thank Sarahgeee for her insights here, and I will catch you in the next Streamer Spotlight when we talk about community focused games.
